"Morning!" Ace yelled at his younger sister while pounding on her bedroom door. He always did this to her on September 5th, no matter how tired she was. She would wake up and stop her brother from pounding her door off its hinges. "Arina, get up! Today is a big day," Ace yelled as he continued to pound her door.
Arina then decided to open her door just then. She got up and opened her door, looking her year older brother in his sea green eyes. "What? It's just Monday."
"Not just any Monday.....it's a special Monday," Ace explained to her, winking at her.
"Oh yes. School starts today. First day!" Arina said with excitement. She went to back in her room, leaving her door open for Ace to walk in. He walked in, sitting on the edge of her unmade bed.
"Well there's that," he responded,"and its your BIRTHDAY!" As he talked, he was ripping an index card into pieces. When he yelled "Happy birthday," he ran over to her and sprinkled the fake confetti all over her hair, getting it caught in her tangled black hair.
"Hey, quit it!" She said playfully as she shook the paper out of her hair. She was ready for the responsibilities that being 13 gave her, the ones her brother have been slacking off of.
"You're getting so old," Ace teased, but Arina didn't mind. They always told each other that on each others birthdays. "So, birthday plans?"
"Same as last year," she answered, "nothing much. I need to get dressed." Ace left the room, shutting the door behind him. He went downstairs to the kitchen and made himself a bowl of cereal.
Arina came down a few minutes later, wearing a green tee shirt, jeans and sneakers. Her black hair was pulled up in a ponytail, her piercing gray eyes hiding behind her blue framed glasses.
She poured a bowl of cereal and sat down next to Ace at the dining room table. In between gulps of her cereal, she would ramble on about how excited she was to be going to eighth grade.
"The teachers are going to love you," Ace said when she was done talking. "I mean, they didn't like me, but they're gonna love you. Teacher loves kids like you. You know, like a good two shoes." He regretted those words as soon he said them.
Arina, who was standing by the sink when he said that, stood in uncomfortable silence until she said, "Do you really think that?" Ace knew how much his younger sister hated that nickname; she was called that since third grade and it made her feel...really bad whenever her older brother said it. He never meant it through, it would just slip from his lips.
"Of course not! Arina, I'm sorry. You know I didn't mean it!" As he tried to apologize, Arina went up to her room and got her backpack filled with school supplies and waited for the bus. Ace went in his room and waited for the bus to come.
As soon as the bus turned onto their road, they walked outside and waited for the bus to open the door. Then, both siblings got on the bus.
