I'm jolted awake by a piercing scream.
"SERENA, WAKE UP!!!!"
I blink rapidly, my vision gradually clearing from the disorienting haze of unconsciousness. The room around me comes into focus—plain and unremarkable, yet comforting in its familiarity. A girl, wearing a light blue-gray hoodie and a short maroon red skirt, her below knee-length socks and neatly tied casual sneakers catching the light, hovers anxiously over me. Her loosely braided hair, with bangs just above her eyebrows and part of it dyed light blue, frames a face with a mole to the left of her lips and hazel-green eyes full of concern.
"Oh... Tomoha," I murmur, my voice still groggy.
Her eyes soften with relief. "Bad dream?"
I nod, trying to push the lingering fear away. "Mhm."
Tomoha gives a gentle smile. "You should rest. I'll be outside if you need anything."
She leaves the room, and I attempt a weak smile, trying to shake off the remnants of my nightmare. The room, though familiar, still feels oddly unsettling.
As soon as Tomoha is gone, I sense a presence in the room. I turn my head and see the murk crouched on the floor near the bed, its dark figure almost blending into the shadows.
"Stop appearing randomly," I say, my voice tinged with frustration.
The murk looks up at me, its dark eyes reflecting a hint of something that might be amusement. "Can't help it," it replies, its voice eerily calm.
I sigh, rubbing my eyes. "Seriously? You can't just give me a break?"
The murk doesn't respond, simply watching me with its inscrutable gaze. The room feels like it's closing in again, but the murk's casual demeanor provides a strange, unsettling comfort.
I sit on the edge of the bed, feeling a mix of exhaustion and frustration. "Whatever. Just don't make it a habit."
The murk remains silent, its presence a constant reminder of the strange reality I'm navigating. I look away, trying to shake off the lingering unease, as the murk fades into the shadows once more.
