The next day, Tsukishima couldn’t shake the thoughts that had been swirling in his mind since the previous night. The evening had been perfect—filled with laughter, the warmth of their friends, and the subtle, intimate moments he shared with Kageyama. But underneath it all, there was a question he couldn’t ignore anymore, something that had been lingering at the edge of his thoughts for days.
Tsukishima had always prided himself on his ability to keep a level head, to stay detached. But Kageyama had a way of breaking through that facade, making him feel things he wasn’t used to. And now, those feelings were becoming too strong to push aside.
That evening, after another tiring practice, Tsukishima decided it was time to do something about it. He texted Kageyama, asking him to come over to his house, saying they needed to talk. It wasn’t unusual for them to hang out after practice, so Kageyama agreed without hesitation, completely unaware of what Tsukishima had in mind.
Kageyama arrived at Tsukishima’s house a little while later, still in his practice clothes and with a light sheen of sweat on his forehead. Tsukishima led him upstairs to his room, his heart pounding a little faster than usual.
As they entered the room, Kageyama looked around, noting how neat and organized everything was. “You’re always so tidy,” he commented, trying to lighten the mood with some small talk. “My room’s always a mess.”
Tsukishima managed a small smile, though his mind was elsewhere. “It’s just easier to keep things clean,” he said, but his voice lacked the usual teasing tone.
Kageyama noticed the shift in Tsukishima’s demeanor and frowned slightly. “Is everything okay? You seem... off.”
Tsukishima took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. “There’s something I need to talk to you about,” he said quietly, motioning for Kageyama to sit on the bed.
Kageyama complied, his confusion growing. “What’s going on? Did I do something wrong?”
Tsukishima shook his head, sitting down next to him. “No, it’s not that. It’s just... I’ve been thinking a lot lately. About us.”
Kageyama’s heart skipped a beat at the word “us.” He had been confused about his feelings for Tsukishima for a while now, unsure of what to make of the closeness they had developed. But hearing Tsukishima bring it up so directly made him feel both nervous and hopeful.
“What do you mean?” Kageyama asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Tsukishima hesitated for a moment, searching for the right words. “I’ve never been good at this kind of thing,” he began, his voice uncharacteristically soft. “I’ve always been the one who kept people at arm’s length, who didn’t let anyone get too close. But with you... it’s different.”
Kageyama’s eyes widened as he listened, his heart pounding in his chest.
“I’ve tried to ignore it,” Tsukishima continued, his gaze focused on his hands, which were nervously twisting together. “I’ve tried to convince myself that it was just because we’re teammates, that it was nothing more than that. But I can’t keep lying to myself. I can’t keep pretending that what I feel for you is just... friendship.”
Kageyama’s breath hitched, and he felt a warmth spread through his chest. He had been so caught up in his own confusion that he hadn’t considered that Tsukishima might be feeling the same way.
