"Storms suck," Sammy complained, as the wind whistled through their hoods, finding its way down their jackets and shirts.
"Yeah, can't be long till we reach the summit," Heidi shivered, tugging at her jacket. It was too short, allowing the biting wind to worm its way up her torso and chilling her.
"The summit will be freezing, can't we skip it? We won't find Maggie and Lara there," Sammy slipped on loose gravel as she said it, landing heavily on her knees.
"Where will we go? Maggie and Lara would be back by now."
Heidi helped Sammy up and brushed her off, before dragging her behind a useful boulder that blocked the wind somewhat.
"Okay, so hear me out. We go over to that shop with the old woman, pick up some new gear, winter stuff and weapons-"
"Why weapons? We've only needed hunting knives before!" Heidi shrieked.
"We need them now. I'm not running forever, and neither could you. They've been pushing their boundaries for a long time, and a skirmish is going to happen soon enough. I want to be part of it. Maybe my father," Sammy's voice became unusually harsh, "will stop coming after me then."
"But we could do that without weapons. I'm not saying it's not a good idea! but where will we go afterwards?"
"To get Maggie and Lara, they would've gone south. You know they weren't coming back for a long time," Sammy pushed, rubbing Heidi's hands between hers, their breath steaming.
"But... oh all right. First we need to get out this goddam storm, find somewhere to heat up," Heidi shook her head, brows knit together.
Sammy stood, shivering, not able to whoop into the air like she wanted, but it was a win nonetheless. She grinned as they stumbled on, looking for a place to shelter as the temperature steadily dropped below zero.
