•Chapter 1•

I jumped off the roof of a greenhouse, gaining my speed once again, jumping over another 10 foot gap. The man chasing me, threw something that made me lose my feet. I tripped, having my mask that was wrapped around my mouth and nose torn off. I was vulnerable. They couldn't see my face, everything I worked so hard for would be ruined. I pushed myself up right as the man grabbed my boot, making me yelp as he twisted it.

"FUCK OFF!" I kicked him in the face, catching him off guard. His neck got trapped between my feet, as I twisted it. I watched him lay still for a couple seconds before standing up and limping away. I walked a couple feet to pick up the backpack that had fallen off me as I fell. I looked at one of the straps, it was ripped. Great, I had thought. This thing was heavy enough.

I typed the passcode into the keypad, that eventually opened the steel door that would allow me to enter my safe house. I groaned. I dropped the bag on the floor in the entry way, standing still and closing my eyes; using my smelling senses to welcome me home.

"Babe? You're home early?" I smiled, taking in my fiancé's voice which reminded me of warm baths and red velvet cake.

"I had a bit of trouble, told my boss I would finish everything tomorrow." My voice croaked, I hadn't gotten what I really needed. I walked into the kitchen to see her brewing tea and cooking my favorite dish. I walked over to her, giving her a gentle kiss on the neck.

"You're in that kind of mood, love?" She showed her dimples, which was always the highlight of my day. I shook my head, kissing her on her ear and on the bandana she wore over her head.

"You're more beautiful without that stupid thing, I love looking at you for you. Don't hide from me." Her dimples disappeared, as she turned to look at me.

"Nick, I..it's hard. You know that." All I did was nod, wrapping my arms around her body. It only lasted a couple seconds because she attempted to remove herself from the hug. I grabbed her hips, and lifted her up so she could sit on the counter. She giggled as I nipped at her lip.

"You're a very sexy and a very beautiful woman. And the best part..is that you're mine. Forever." I kissed her collarbone as I dragged her loose shirt off her shoulders. Her fingers ran through my hair as I kissed her shoulders, then the wraps that covered her wrists. She shifted her legs so they could tighten around my torso. I stood back up, kissed her on the lips as I put my hand on her head, gently undoing the knot that was apart of the bandana that covered her head. I set it on the counter. I heard her sniff. I am not going to allow the love of my life to be punishing herself for something that could've happened to anybody. I love her for who she is, even after chemo. She may have changed on the outside, but I fell in love with her because of what was on the inside. I picked her chin up, to see her eyes glassy.

"Shh baby, you are absolutely stunning. It will all be okay, I know you don't see that now but-" She burst out in tears. I shut my eyes, not wanting to break in front of her. She couldn't know she was tearing me apart too, doing this to herself. I placed my forehead against hers, giving her kisses every once and a while. She couldn't finish dinner, I know she doesn't have that much strength. She was still sniffling when I carried her up to bed. She curled up into a ball, as I grabbed sweatpants and one of my t-shirts. She can never sleep without one of my shirts, ever since the first time we've slept together, which was 5 years ago.

I walked over back to her, sitting her up and switching shirts. Once I put her in the covers, I gave her a kiss goodnight and laid with her until she was soundless. I went downstairs to turn everything off. Its been a long night, and I have an early day tomorrow.

After I did my nightly routine, I got into bed next to the woman I loved and shut my eyes, letting sleep overcome me for the first time in 48 hours.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

I woke up to a sound of shuffling downstairs. Other than me, the bed was empty. I looked at the time; it was quarter past three. I had a sense of struggle in the room that has happened quite recently. It couldn't have been recent enough to happen tonight, could it have?

I heard a muffled scream. I threw the covers off of me, and took slow steps to the door, turning my neck a bit to look down the stairs. There was a light on.

"Bodie?!" I yelled. I heard a slapping noise as she screamed.

I went back to the bed and grabbed the gun that was hidden between the mattress and the bed frame. I cocked my gun, then silently walked down the stairs, turned left and immediately saw shadows against the opposite wall. I heard voices.

"Get your husband down here."

"For the last time! I don't have a husband." Bodie was grunting, I knew what she was doing. I taught her a couple tricks.

"There was somebody sleeping next to you, and we were informed that it was your fiancé, Nick." She gave a snort and tried to hide her laughter.

"Oh, vous I'homme stupide, Nick nest pas un homme."

"Excuse me? Why don't you speak English, cunt." She just laughed again.

"You stupid stupid man. Nick isn't a man. Nick is short for-." And after that, all she did was smile. She then turned her head towards my direction, giving away the spot where I was hiding.

"Nicola."

Which all she had to say to see the shock on the mans face.
