Several moons had passed since that incident in the tunnels.
And Rhaenys had to admit that she couldn't sleep for many nights afterward, secretly forcing Aegon to stay with her at night and asking Ser Arryk to stand guard inside her chambers, despite it being quite improper.
Rhaenys couldn't close her eyes without seeing that man, without remembering the smile that seemed unconcerned with any possible consequences. And the fact that he wandered the tunnels, one of which ended precisely at the princess's chambers, didn't make anything easier.
However, fortunately for the princess, over time, and with the fact that she never saw the man again, her heart began to calm, and her fear started to diminish. She owed this not only to Aegon and Arryk but also to Karnax and the newest addition to the family.
Two moons ago, the egg had finally hatched. And just as Aegon had done with her, Rhaenys had brought her brother to witness the birth of the dragon as soon as the word reached her. The birth of this dragon was as beautiful as Sunfyre's. To everyone's surprise, and contrary to the predictions of many wise men, Rhaenys and the young dragon bonded immediately, leaving no doubt as to who would be its rider when it grew, no matter how impossible it seemed.
The dragon was magnificent. Blue as the night sky, with golden scales crowning its head and tracing down its spine and tail, with some details on its wings as well. It was stunning—a marriage between the dark night and the sun that lights the day. Between the most beautiful sapphires and the richest of gold.
It was the love of Rhaenys's life, the most cherished hatchling the world had ever seen, always under the protective wings of its mother. But the beauty of that birth wasn't the only thing that warmed the princess's heart that day. No.
Aegon seemed to always find a way to warm his sister's heart. He surprised the princess, after all these years, with a tenderness and love that Rhaenys had never seen before. A love that made her heart melt.
As he watched the small creature climb up Rhaenys's shoulder, Aegon couldn't resist suggesting a name: Hūrazys (Moonfyre). Rhaenys chuckled softly at her brother's lack of originality.
"When you and I are separated, I will look at Sunfyre and remember how you illuminated my days. So, when you're in the North, where the sun doesn't reach, I hope you'll look at the moon and at this little dragon and remember me."
How could she say no? How could Rhaenys look into those eyes, shining with emotion—though to this day, he insists something was in them—and refuse such a beautiful request?
He would look at Sunfyre and remember the sun that had been taken from him, and she would look at Hūrazys, seeing the moon that would watch over her until the day she died.
It was almost poetry. Almost a song.
And the fact that they had witnessed the birth of this pair of dragons together, who were getting along so well, almost like older and younger siblings—almost as if they were their children—was beautiful.
It was perfect.
"Ynot, Hūrazys!" (Come to me, Moonfyre) Rhaenys commanded, her eyes filled with a sea of pride as she looked at the small dragon.
She was at the Dragonpit watching Karnax as she was gazing at the hatchling with eyes as golden as molten gold, making Rhaenys feel every emotion the dragon felt.
Love and pride.
It was amusing to think that no one had ever wondered if the bond between dragons could be as strong as that of a family. Beyond the connection between a dragon and its rider.
