November 1, 2023.
Three fucking steps. That had been the only thing between Althea and me last night.
I could still see in her Super Peachy costume, her big doe eyes waiting for me to do something, to meet her halfway.
Her foot had already been lifted to cross the first step, maybe even the two others if I'd asked her, and the words had been on my lips, along with many other pleas. But instead, I'd said I needed to go back inside.
To do what? Get wasted after letting the woman I loved slip through my fingers like a stupid 17-year-old?
The problem was that I couldn't run after her now, three fucking steps or thousands of miles away, where the plane was currently taking her.
It was already a struggle to push my wheelchair out of my room, the hangover throbbing through all my movements, though not as much as her absence, and that's what kept me going through the quiet hallway like a man on a mission.
And apparently, I wasn't the only one. Though Caleb's secret evasion failed on his first step out of Sarah's door.
"You know s'not visiting hours yet?"
His look of terror meeting my cocked eyebrow was priceless, even more with his horror costume from last night, or at least, the parts he'd bothered to put back on, and if it had been any other day, I would have prolonged the torture a little bit more.
"Don't worry. I won't tell. Glad someone scored last night."
I had no idea what Althea had told Sarah the other day, but it had worked, judging by Caleb's swollen grin that not even the shock could have taken down and his girlfriend's blushing face that peeked from behind him.
"Thank you. We promise to return the favor if you need."
"Yeah, yeah, we can still dream, but for now, gotta go to PT."
"You know Daniel doesn't arrive until 9?" Sarah shared a knowing smile with Caleb, and I would blame love for making them delusional, although I could feel myself losing my grip on sanity too as I glanced down at my peach wristband and replied,
