The more Lily and I uncovered about her great-grandmother Margaret and the mysterious origins of her powers, the more we realized that there was a piece of the puzzle missing-something that tied all the clues together. And as we delved deeper, it became increasingly clear that Lily's mother, Alexa, knew more than she was letting on.

For days, we had debated whether to involve her. Alexa was a reserved woman, always focused on her work and rarely discussing family matters. But with the revelations about Margaret's connection to the Shenlong and the ancient powers that ran through their bloodline, it was becoming impossible to ignore the possibility that Alexa might have the answers we needed.

One evening, as the sun dipped low in the sky, casting long shadows across the living room, Lily finally made up her mind.

"I think it's time we talked to my mom," she said, her voice heavy with determination. "She knows something, Eileen. I'm sure of it."

I nodded, understanding the weight of what she was about to do. "You're right. We need her help if we're going to figure this out. But are you sure you're ready for whatever she might say?"

Lily took a deep breath, her eyes narrowing with resolve. "I have to be. This power... it's part of who I am. And if my mom knows something that can help me control it, then I need to hear it."

That evening, we waited until Alexa came home from work. The house was quiet, with only the ticking of the clock in the hallway breaking the silence. When Alexa finally walked through the door, she seemed tired, her eyes shadowed with the weariness of the day.

"Mom," Lily began, standing up as Alexa entered the room. "Can we talk? There's something important I need to ask you."

Alexa looked at her daughter, then at me, a flicker of concern crossing her face. "Of course, Lily. What's going on?"

Lily glanced at me for reassurance before turning back to her mother. "It's about our family-about great-grandmother Margaret. Eileen and I have been doing some research, and we found out a lot about her past. But there's still so much we don't understand."

Alexa's expression remained neutral, but I could see the tension in her posture. "Margaret... I see. What exactly have you found?"

"We found out that Margaret had powers," Lily said, her voice trembling slightly. "The same powers I have. But we don't know where they came from, or why they were passed down to me. And I think you might know more than you've told me."

For a moment, Alexa said nothing, her eyes locked on Lily's. The silence was suffocating, and I could feel the weight of the unspoken words hanging in the air. Finally, she sighed, her shoulders slumping as if a great burden had been placed upon them.

"Lily," she began, her voice soft but firm, "there are some things about our family's past that I hoped you would never have to know. I've tried to protect you from it, to keep you safe. But it seems that time has come."

Lily took a step closer to her mother, her eyes pleading. "Mom, please. I need to understand what's happening to me. I need to know the truth."

Alexa hesitated, her eyes filled with a mix of fear and sorrow. "I didn't want you to have to carry this burden," she whispered. "But I see now that I can't keep it from you any longer."

She sat down on the couch, motioning for Lily and me to join her. When we were seated, Alexa took a deep breath and began to speak.

"Our family's story goes back much further than you realize," she said, her voice tinged with the weight of history. "It begins in a small village in China, where our ancestors lived for generations. The village was called Longhua, and it was a place steeped in tradition and legend."

Lily and I exchanged a glance-we had heard some of this before, but we stayed silent, letting Alexa continue.

"Our family was deeply connected to the spirit of the mountain, the Shenlong. It was said to be a powerful dragon that controlled the elements, and those who were touched by its power were both blessed and cursed. The Chen family was one of the few who had this connection, a connection that was passed down through the generations."

"But why?" Lily asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Why were we chosen?"

"No one knows for sure," Alexa admitted. "Some believe it was because of a pact made by our ancestors, a bargain struck with the Shenlong for protection or prosperity. Others think it was simply fate-a random twist of destiny. Whatever the reason, the power has been in our bloodline for centuries."

"And Margaret?" I asked, leaning forward. "What happened to her?"

Alexa's face tightened with pain. "Margaret was the first in our family to come to America. She was young and full of hope, but she didn't fully understand the power she carried with her. When she first arrived, she tried to live a normal life, to fit in. But the power inside her grew stronger, and she struggled to control it."

"The fire," Lily said, her voice trembling. "She caused it, didn't she?"

Alexa nodded, her eyes clouded with memory. "Yes. It was an accident-she didn't mean to harm anyone. But the power had become too much for her to handle. After that, she knew she had to leave, to protect those around her. She started over, changed her name, and tried to bury the past. But the power never left her."

"And you?" Lily asked, her voice filled with a mix of fear and determination. "Do you have the power too?"

Alexa hesitated, her eyes searching Lily's face. "I do. But I've kept it hidden for as long as I can remember. My mother taught me how to control it, how to suppress it. I never wanted it to define me, and I didn't want it to affect you."

Lily's hands trembled as she reached out to her mother. "But it has, Mom. I can't control it-I'm scared of what it could do. Please, you have to help me."

Tears welled up in Alexa's eyes as she took Lily's hands in hers. "I never wanted this for you," she whispered. "But you're right. I can't hide it anymore. I'll teach you everything I know-how to control it, how to live with it. We'll get through this together."

Lily's eyes were filled with a mix of relief and fear. "Thank you, Mom. I don't want to be afraid anymore."

As they embraced, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the moment unfolding before me. The secrets of the past were finally being revealed, and with them came the hope of a future where Lily could control her powers.

But as I watched the bond between mother and daughter grow stronger, I couldn't shake the feeling that our journey was far from over. There were still so many questions left unanswered-about the Shenlong, about the true nature of the powers, and about the dangers that might still lie ahead.

For now, though, we had taken a crucial step forward. With Alexa's guidance, Lily would finally begin to understand the power within her. And together, we would face whatever challenges the future held.

But in the back of my mind, I couldn't help but wonder-what if there was more to this power than any of us realized? And what if the secrets we had uncovered were just the beginning of something far greater?
