Desired conversation
I was slowly waking from the depths of sleep, the darkness of unconsciousness giving way to the faint, warm light filtering through the room. My eyelids felt heavy as if they were reluctant to open, but eventually, they fluttered, allowing me to take in my surroundings. The familiar scents of the room mingled with the soft murmur of voices, and it took me a moment to fully realize where I was.
When I finally managed to focus, I saw three figures sitting nearby—Maria, Zoha, and Anum. They were seated on the couch, their expressions varying from concern to mild amusement. Maria's eyes met mine first, her face a mix of relief and something else I couldn't quite place. Zoha, my cousin, seemed a bit perplexed, her brow furrowed slightly as she studied me. Anum, on the other hand, was engrossed in her phone, occasionally glancing up with a curious smile.
“Welcome back to the land of the living,” Zoha quipped, a teasing lilt to her voice. “We were starting to wonder if you’d decided to make this couch your permanent residence.”
I chuckled weakly, still trying to shake off the last remnants of sleep. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to doze off like that. I must have been more tired than I realized.”
Maria, who had been quietly observing me, finally spoke up, her voice gentle but tinged with concern. “You looked like you needed the rest. I didn’t have the heart to wake you, especially after...everything.”
There was a pause, the unspoken words hanging in the air. I could sense a mixture of emotions in her tone—concern, affection, maybe even a hint of guilt. But before I could dwell on it, Zoha jumped in, her playful nature taking over.
“Well, at least you weren’t snoring,” she teased, winking at me. “Otherwise, we might’ve had to reconsider letting you sleep here.”
I rolled my eyes at her, grateful for the light-heartedness she brought to the situation. “Gee, thanks, Zoha. I’ll make sure to keep that in mind next time I need a nap.”
Anum finally looked up from her phone, her expression one of feigned seriousness. “You know, it’s not every day that someone gets the privilege of sleeping through an impromptu girls’ gathering. We might have to start charging you for the entertainment.”
I laughed, shaking my head. “I didn’t mean to crash the party. But I appreciate the free pass this time.”
Maria smiled softly at our banter, but there was still something in her eyes, something that hinted at deeper thoughts. “It’s okay,” she said, her voice almost too quiet. “I’m just glad you’re feeling better.”
There was a warmth in her words, a tenderness that made my heart skip a beat. I had seen different sides of Maria—her professionalism, her vulnerability, her kindness—but this moment felt different. It was as if she was opening up to me in a way that went beyond words, and it stirred something within me.
Zoha, ever perceptive, seemed to pick up on the subtle shift in the atmosphere. She glanced between us, her eyes narrowing slightly as if she were trying to solve a puzzle. “You two seem...close,” she observed, her tone casual but laced with curiosity.
Maria blushed slightly, and I felt a flush of warmth creep up my neck as well. “We’ve had some...interesting experiences together,” I replied, trying to keep my tone light but failing to hide the deeper connection I felt.
Zoha raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. “Oh? Interesting how?”
I opened my mouth to respond, but before I could say anything, Maria interjected, her voice playful yet firm. “Interesting in ways that are none of your business, Zoha.”
