I was caressing her hair as she lay beside me, spooning. My mind wandered to the troubling thought, "What if she gets pregnant?" I cursed myself for not being more careful. She stirred and woke up, stretching before turning towards me with a smile. I smiled back and kissed her forehead; she kissed the tip of my nose and pulled me in for a warm hug.
She stood up, wearing my tee, and headed to the bathroom, walking awkwardly. After her bath, she came out and dressed up while I was still lost in my deep thoughts. Minutes later, she kissed me on the lips, bringing me back to reality.
"What's wrong, love?" she asked.
"Nothing, baby... you get ready. I'll be back in a few minutes."
After bathing and dressing up, I moved towards the door. She asked, "Where are you going?"
"I'll tell you once I'm back," I replied.
I headed to the medical shop and asked the shopkeeper about contraceptive pills. He gave me some, and I headed back home, finding her asleep on the couch with books in her hand. I gently woke her up.
"Sorry, baby, I was too tired," she said.
"It's okay, love. Come, take this tablet now."
She frowned. "What's that?"
"Contraceptive pill."
"Are you stupid, Aravind?" she raised her voice.
"Baby... don't play! This is serious! You are taking it! Full stop."
"I'm dead serious too, Aravind! I won't take them."
"Why not???" I asked sternly.
"This pill can affect my future fertility! I'm not taking that risk!"
"Only this once! This is my firm decision!"
"Mine too!"
She stormed out, collecting her bags. I huffed in annoyance and sat down. A few minutes later, I saw her food untouched and her lunch box left behind. I collected them, cursing myself for raising my voice.
Entering the class, I found her leaning on the bench. I texted her, and she took her phone, got up, and read the message.
"Are you okay? I'm sorry for raising my voice, but I'm firm in my decision," I wrote.
"Why are you so stubborn now, Aravind?? Nothing will happen. If it does, what's wrong with that?" she replied without looking at me.
"You could get pregnant, Chaaru!"
"I know! What's wrong with getting pregnant if it's our symbol of love?"
"You are joking!"
