The mouth-watering smell of grilled steak lured me awake. My eyes fluttered open as my stomach grumbled. Groaning, I pushed myself onto my elbows and looked around disoriented. My gaze was immediately drawn to Kian, partly because he was carrying a plate of food over to me, and partly because it was Kian. The last events slowly came back to me.
"You knocked me out," I muttered accusingly.
He smirked. "You are cuter when you sleep."
I glared at him but accepted the plate he held out to me nonetheless and with thanks. Kian sat down at the edge of the bed with a sigh. "I apologize. It was unintentional. I need to restrain myself until we are home."
"And then? I won't magically generate more blood on your planet, will I?"
Kian shrugged. "In a way, that is exactly what you will do."
"What?" I frowned, then pushed a piece of meat into my mouth that tasted exactly as good as it should, given that this was the first proper meal I'd had in a month. My eyes dropped shut, and I moaned softly, flopping back against the pillows. All else was forgotten. "This is so good."
"I'm glad you like it," Kian replied with a beautiful smile.
My heart fluttered unasked for, and I quickly concentrated on my food. I kept eating, only after remembering what we had been talking about. I eyed him warily. "What did you mean when you said I would kind of magically generate blood on your planet?"
"I do wish I could show you, but I guess an explanation will have to suffice for now." He sighed and sat down in front of me with his legs crossed. "We have what you would call magic. It is generated by the planet and imbued in all things, accumulating in living things as they consume others. We vampires feed on this energy."
"You're telling me I have magic in my blood?" I asked confused. "But there's no magic on earth."
Kian smirked. "There is. But there are a lot of very greedy consumers. Unlike humans in my world, your species developed the ability to absorb the planet's energy passively. It leaves earth almost void of excess energy and therefore prevents any active use of magic."
"Active use of magic?"
"Yes. The basic forms are igniting and cooling, and the use of force. I will show you this, so don't make me explain."
Since he apparently hated it so much, I gave in with a nod. "Fine. So just that I understand correctly, when we go to your planet, I will magically generate more blood because your planet has more energy for me to absorb?"
"No, but blood loss is not the issue. I take almost no blood when I drink from you. It is mostly your energy."
I frowned at that, still missing some things. "But you're also giving energy back to me, aren't you?"
Kian nodded. "Vampires alter the energy they consume. This enables us to use magic differently, to regenerate and replenish, to prolong our lives, and to heal our wounds. I am sharing this with you."
"But this energy - it is different for every vampire, isn't it?" I asked, curious. "Both Nikos and Elena felt like you, but different. Nikos more than Elena."
Now it was Kian's turn to frown at me. "That is very perceptive, yes. This energy is tailored to a unique protein in our blood. It prevents vampires from drinking each other's energy, causing them to fall ill if they do. Severely, if they drink a lot."
"But humans don't have that protein," I concluded.
"The humans from my world didn't. Humans from your world do."
