As the interview wrapped up and the camera crew began to pack away their equipment, there was a brief moment of silence between Seo Kang Joo and Joo Eun Ho. The air was thick with unspoken words, both of them aware that their interaction had been more than just a professional exchange. Kang Joo, feeling the weight of the years that had passed, knew he couldn’t let her walk away without trying to reconnect.
Clearing his throat, Kang Joo decided to break the silence. “Eun Ho, I’m really glad we got to see each other again,” he began, his voice softer, more personal than it had been during the interview. “It’s been a long time.”
Eun Ho smiled, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Yes, it has. I wasn’t expecting to see you here, but it’s nice to catch up… in a way.”
Kang Joo took a step closer, lowering his voice as if to create a more intimate space between them. “It feels like we have a lot of catching up to do, don’t you think? I mean, there’s so much we never got to say back then.”
Eun Ho glanced around, suddenly feeling a bit exposed in the busy room. “Maybe,” she said cautiously, unsure of where he was going with this. She had always admired Kang Joo’s confidence, but now, being on the receiving end of it was making her heart race.
Sensing her hesitation, Kang Joo smiled reassuringly. “I know you’re probably busy with your schedule, but there’s an after-party for the festival tonight. I was wondering if you might want to join me. It would be a good chance to… I don’t know, talk about old times. No cameras, no work, just us.”
Eun Ho blinked in surprise. She hadn’t expected him to ask her out so directly. “An after-party?” she echoed, buying herself a moment to think. She wasn’t sure if revisiting the past was a good idea. But the way he looked at her, with that same warmth and curiosity she remembered from years ago, made her heart soften.
“I mean, we don’t have to talk about anything too deep,” Kang Joo added quickly, sensing her reluctance. “We could just… reminisce, remember the good times. Like that time we skipped class to watch that terrible movie—what was it called again? The one with the aliens and the singing cats?”
Eun Ho let out a genuine laugh, the memory of that ridiculous movie coming back to her. “Oh my God, Stellar Cat Invasion! I can’t believe you remember that! We were the only ones in the theater.”
“Yeah,” Kang Joo chuckled, relieved to see her smile. “And we spent the whole time making fun of it. I think we annoyed the couple sitting two rows behind us. They probably thought we were crazy.”
Eun Ho shook her head, her smile lingering. “That was such a fun day. We were supposed to be studying for exams, but you convinced me to take a break. I think that’s when I realized how much I liked spending time with you.”
Kang Joo’s expression softened at her words, his gaze growing more intense. “I felt the same way. You were always the one who made everything more fun, more interesting. Even the most boring lecture became bearable when you were there to joke around with.”
There was a moment of silence as they both reflected on the memories they had shared, memories that seemed so distant yet still so vivid. Eun Ho could feel the pull of those days, the simplicity of their friendship, and the warmth of their unspoken bond.“
Those were good times,” she admitted quietly, her eyes meeting his. “I’ve missed that… missed us.”
Kang Joo nodded, taking a small step closer, closing the distance between them. “So have I. I know we both chose our own paths back then, but I’ve always wondered… what if we had taken a different road? What if we hadn’t let each other go?”
Eun Ho felt her heart thudding in her chest, the weight of his words settling in. “I’ve wondered the same thing,” she whispered, the vulnerability in her voice surprising even herself. “But we were so young, so focused on our futures. Maybe it wasn’t the right time for us.”
“Maybe,” Kang Joo agreed, his voice thoughtful. “But that doesn’t mean it has to stay that way. We’re here now, aren’t we? Maybe this is our second chance, Eun Ho.”
The sincerity in his voice made her breath catch. She had always admired his ability to be straightforward, to say what was on his mind without hesitation. It was one of the things that had drawn her to him in the first place. But now, faced with the possibility of revisiting those old feelings, she wasn’t sure if she was ready to take that leap.
Seeing the conflict in her eyes, Kang Joo gently reached out, touching her arm lightly. “You don’t have to decide anything right now,” he said, his tone reassuring. “Just come to the party tonight. We can talk, laugh, remember the good times. No pressure, no expectations. Just… two old friends catching up.”
Eun Ho hesitated for a moment, weighing her options. The logical side of her told her to keep her distance, to stay focused on her career and the life she had built for herself. But the part of her that had always cared for Kang Joo, the part that had never fully let go, was urging her to take this chance, to see where it might lead.
Finally, she nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. “Okay, I’ll come. But only if you promise not to bring up any more embarrassing memories,” she teased, trying to lighten the mood.
Kang Joo grinned, the tension between them easing. “I can’t make any promises. But I’ll try.”
As they parted ways, both of them felt a sense of anticipation and nervous excitement. The after-party would be their chance to reconnect, to explore the feelings they had left behind all those years ago. And as they walked in opposite directions, both Kang Joo and Eun Ho knew that tonight could change everything.
