The Departure
The morning sun cast a gentle light over Busan as Eun Ho packed her suitcase, her movements mechanical and detached. She hadn’t slept much, her mind replaying the events of the night before in an endless loop. The weight of her decision hung heavy on her shoulders, and her eyes, swollen from crying, felt like they could shed no more tears. She had hoped that by the time morning came, the pain would have dulled, but it was just as sharp as ever.
Her phone buzzed on the bedside table, and with a deep breath, she picked it up. The screen was filled with notifications—over 20 messages from Kang Joo, along with multiple missed calls and voice messages. She couldn’t bring herself to listen to them. She didn’t want to cry anymore, especially not in front of her team. Her colleagues had always known her as the strong, confident one, and she couldn’t bear the thought of them seeing her like this—broken and vulnerable.
She slipped on her sunglasses, hoping they would hide the redness in her eyes. As she joined her team for breakfast in the hotel dining area, she kept her head down, trying to avoid drawing attention to herself. But despite her best efforts, her colleagues noticed her uncharacteristic silence and the way she seemed to be withdrawing into herself.
“Are you okay, Eun Ho?” one of them asked gently, concern evident in their voice.
Eun Ho forced a small smile, nodding. “I’m fine. Just tired,” she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. But she knew they weren’t convinced. They exchanged worried glances but said nothing more, respecting her need for space.
An Unexpected Encounter:
As she pushed her food around her plate, Eun Ho’s thoughts were interrupted by the sudden buzz of activity near the entrance of the dining area. She glanced up, her heart skipping a beat as she saw Kang Joo walk in. He looked as though he hadn’t slept either, his usually composed appearance replaced by a disheveled look of desperation and exhaustion.
Panic surged through her. She wasn’t ready to face him, not after everything that had happened. She quickly finished her meal, making a hasty excuse to her teammates as she stood up to leave. But just as she reached for her handbag, she felt a familiar hand gently grip her arm.
“Eun Ho,” Kang Joo’s voice was a mix of relief and urgency, and when she turned to face him, she could see the raw emotion in his eyes. Her teammates, along with other guests in the dining area, looked on in surprise as Kang Joo pulled her aside, leading her out to a nearby private balcony that overlooked the city.
The Confrontation:
Once they were alone, the tension between them was palpable. Kang Joo’s grip on her arm softened, but he didn’t let go, as if afraid she might slip away again. He looked as miserable as she felt, and the sight of him like this made her heart ache.
“Eun Ho, please,” he began, his voice low and filled with desperation. “I need to know what happened. Why did you leave like that? Why are you shutting me out?”
Eun Ho couldn’t bring herself to meet his gaze. She turned her head, staring out at the city, her heart pounding in her chest. How could she explain what she had done? How could she tell him that she had let someone else’s words get to her, that she had doubted him when she should have trusted him?
Kang Joo took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. “Did you see Ji Yeon?” he asked, his voice quieter now, tinged with a sadness that made Eun Ho’s chest tighten. “Because if you did… I need you to know that whatever she said to you, it’s not true.”
Eun Ho’s breath caught in her throat. How did he know? She had tried so hard to keep it to herself, to bear the weight of it alone, but here he was, confronting the very thing she had been running from.
“She told me,” Kang Joo continued, his voice trembling slightly, “that you’re not good enough for me, that you’re not fashionable enough, not pretty enough… that you don’t belong in my world. But Eun Ho… she’s wrong. She’s been doing this for years, trying to keep anyone she thinks is close to me away. But she doesn’t understand. She doesn’t know that in my heart… I’ve only ever had you.”
The confession hung in the air between them, raw and honest, and for a moment, Eun Ho couldn’t breathe. She turned to look at him, finally meeting his eyes, and what she saw there broke through all the walls she had built up. He wasn’t lying. There was no agenda, no ulterior motive—just the pure, unfiltered truth.
Tears welled up in her eyes, but this time, they weren’t tears of sorrow. They were tears of relief, of release, of a burden she hadn’t realized she’d been carrying until now. “I’m so sorry, Kang Joo,” she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. “I should have trusted you. I should have known… I’m so sorry.”
Kang Joo’s eyes softened, and without a second thought, he pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly as if he was afraid she might slip away again. “Eun Ho, don’t be sorry. I’m the one who’s sorry, for not finding you sooner, for letting you go through this alone. But I’m here now, and I’m not going anywhere.”
The sincerity in his voice, the way he held her as if she was the most precious thing in the world, broke down the last of her defenses. She wrapped her arms around him, clutching his shirt as she let out a sob, not of sadness, but of relief. She had been so afraid, so lost, but now, in his arms, she felt safe. She felt loved.
Kang Joo pulled back just enough to look into her eyes, his hands gently cupping her face. “Eun Ho, you’re everything to me. I don’t care about Ji Yeon, or what anyone else says. I care about you. I always have.”
His words were like a balm to her wounded heart, and in that moment, she knew—this was real. What they had was real, and she wasn’t going to let fear or doubt take it away from them.Without thinking, she leaned in, closing the distance between them, and for the first time, their lips met in a kiss that was as passionate as their love. It wasn’t just a kiss—it was a promise, a declaration that they would fight for this, that they would work it out no matter what.
Kang Joo responded with equal fervor, his arms tightening around her as if he couldn’t bear to let her go. The kiss deepened, filled with all the emotions they had kept bottled up for so long—love, longing, relief, and a burning desire to never be apart again.
When they finally pulled away, both of them were breathless, their foreheads resting against each other as they tried to catch their breath. Kang Joo smiled, his eyes shining with a mix of happiness and determination. “We’ll figure this out, Eun Ho. Together. I promise.”
Eun Ho nodded, her heart swelling with love for the man in front of her. “Together,” she whispered, sealing the promise with another kiss, knowing that whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them hand in hand.
