The Hogwarts Express was steaming away from King's Cross Station, its familiar chugging and whistling resonating with the excitement of students returning for a new school year. Daisy Dawson, her brother Chris, and their friends—James Sirius Potter, Bella Timber, Gwen Weasley, and Benjamin Hall—settled into their compartment, their chatter and laughter a stark contrast to the tension simmering beneath the surface.
The summer holidays had been a time of unexpected closeness for Daisy and James, yet an argument had cast a shadow over their friendship. As the train journeyed toward Hogwarts, the atmosphere in their compartment was charged with a mixture of anticipation and unresolved conflict.
James, trying to bridge the gap, turned to Daisy. "So, Daisy, did you get into any good books over the summer?"
Daisy looked up from her magazine, her expression guarded. "A few. I read through the magical creatures compendium you recommended."
James's eyes lit up with genuine interest. "That's great! What did you think of the nifflers? They're pretty fascinating, don't you think?"
Daisy shrugged, not meeting his gaze. "They were interesting, I suppose."
Chris, sitting across from them, tried to ease the tension by shifting the conversation. "Bella, did you do anything exciting this summer?"
Bella smiled warmly. "I spent a lot of time with my family. We went on a few trips and I even got some time to practice magic."
"That sounds wonderful!" Gwen said, chiming in from her seat next to James. "I heard there were some amazing Quidditch matches at the Weasley family gatherings."
James eagerly joined in. "Oh, you should have seen the matches! The Weasley cousins are a tough crowd."
Daisy's attempts to remain detached were evident. "Sounds like you had a great time."
The conversation continued, but Daisy's replies were brief, and James's efforts to reconnect only seemed to amplify the awkwardness. The camaraderie they had once shared felt distant.
As the train pulled into Hogwarts, the sense of anticipation for the new school year was palpable. Daisy, trying to avoid any more uncomfortable interactions, followed Chris and Bella toward the castle, deliberately keeping a few steps behind James and Gwen.
In the Great Hall, the Sorting Hat ceremony began, and Daisy sat with Chris and Bella, pointedly placing herself away from James and Gwen. Her thoughts were occupied with the recent argument and the way their summer had ended.
The feast was lively, but Daisy barely touched her food, her mind preoccupied with the unresolved tension with James. James, seated at the Gryffindor table with Gwen, tried to catch Daisy's eye, but she averted her gaze.
As the evening wore on, Daisy and Chris made their way to Gryffindor Tower. The warmth of the common room did little to ease Daisy's heavy heart. She knew she needed to address the issues with James, but finding the right words felt challenging.
In the quiet of their dormitory, Daisy lay on her bed, staring up at the ceiling. The laughter and excitement of her friends felt distant, and the summer that had seemed so promising now felt overshadowed by the lingering tension between her and James.
As she drifted off to sleep, Daisy wondered if their bond could ever be repaired or if the summer's argument had irreparably altered their friendship. The first night back at Hogwarts was supposed to be filled with joy, but for Daisy, it was tinged with uncertainty and a sense of melancholy.
