"Here," Tomasso held the canister and mask out to Maggie, but she wasn't fast enough with hiding her expression. "What? You rather keep huffing fleshies?" he sounded agitated.
Maggie didn't reach out to grab it. She didn't trust Tomasso one bit, let alone anything he supposedly found.
"Allright, suit yourself," Tomasso shrugged. "Alden, how about you?"
"I'm fine for now." He even managed to fake a little smile. He couldn't let on that this was a little too good to be true.
"I just can't figure out how they knew," Amaia muttered.
"Maybe it was Luther who tipped them off," Tomasso opted as he rummaged around the vats again. "He left us. He didn't want to go through with any of it."
"No. No. No. No." Amaia's breathing picked up. "It can't be him."
Alden knew that Amaia spoke the truth. Luther couldn't be the traitor because he was dead. Not that he could say it out loud without making enemies of the people they still needed.
"What would he get out of it?" she asked.
Alden shot Maggie another knowing look. There was only one person who it could've been.
Maggie gave a vague nod and her face hardened. She pointed at Tomasso with her flashlight. "It was him."
Tomasso stayed silent for a moment, but recovered from his shock, "what the hell are you talking about?"
"You knew where to go in there, brought us to that room. Very convenient that it had access to the sewers, don't you think? Also very convenient you knew exactly where to go." Alden rested his hand on his holster. "And now these oxygen tanks? That's too much luck for anyone."
"You even knew how to get inside in the first place with that bullshit nono story," Maggie spat.
"Bullshit?" Tomasso scoffed angrily. "It's how I got out the first time when I was being tortured."
"Or he cut you a deal."
"A deal?" He walked closer to her. "Yo, that methane is going to your head." He turned back to Amia. "Are you hearing this?"
"Don't you dare speak to my wife like that," Alden bit back as he stepped in between Tomasso and her. "She's right and you're trying to cover your ass." His eyes trailed to Amaia. "Because you're afraid of losing. So afraid you were willing to sacrifice everyone you knew and cared about. She knew and cared about."
"You told the Croat where your hideouts were so he could raid them. Probably gave him a signal to let him know that we were coming," Maggie continued.
"You're paranoid, you know that?" Tomasso decided to ignore Alden and only focussed on Maggie. "You don't trust nobody."
"Why did you take off your pack?" her face grew even sterner.
"What?" He was starting to look scared.
"Before you found the oxygen tanks, why did you take your pack off?"
He moved his jaw to say something, but remained quiet. Amaia was starting to believe Maggie and sadness slowly crept up on her face. Alden decided to stand close to her, he didn't know how she would react to heartbreak and betrayal.
Maggie straightened her back. "Do you wanna say it, or shall I?"
Tomasso walked past her and straight to Amaia. Alden blocked his path. He wouldn't let him near Amaia now. He could only manipulate her. Use the trust she had for him against him.
"Amaia, you can't believe-" he started.
"He had the tanks in his pack the whole time!" Maggie snapped. "I bet taking them was the signal."
