The next morning, I woke up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day. I went through my usual routine—brushing my teeth, taking a shower, and getting dressed. After a quick breakfast, I headed to the office, where I was greeted by the familiar buzz of coworkers and the hum of computers. But today, there was an unusual energy in the air, a sense of finality that I couldn't quite place. As I settled into my desk, the announcement came through: this was going to be our last week in the office. After that, we would all be returning to remote work. The news was met with mixed reactions—some sighed with relief, while others looked a bit disappointed. My heart skipped a beat as I realized this meant Adrian, our boss, would be returning to his main office, far away from here.
Just as I was processing this news, Aashima, my colleague and friend, leaned over and teased, "So, Sir is going back this week. You must be feeling sad."
I shook my head, trying to appear indifferent. "No, yaar, I don't mind him going back," I replied, hoping my voice didn’t betray me.
Aashima looked at me skeptically. "Are you sure?" she pressed, clearly not convinced.
I forced a smile. "Yes, definitely sure," I said, trying to sound as confident as possible.
She looked at me for a moment, her expression showing reluctant agreement. "Okay, if you say so," she finally said, though her tone suggested she wasn’t entirely convinced.
I could see the curiosity brewing in her eyes, so I asked, "Say, what do you want to know, Aashima?"
She blinked in surprise. "How did you know I wanted to ask you something?"
"It's written all over your face," I replied with a smirk. "So, ask away."
Aashima hesitated for a second before blurting out, "How come you're not affected by this news? Just a few days ago, you were so excited about him, and now... nothing?"
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. "Yes, I was excited before, but I've come to terms with reality. I'm just an employee to him, and he probably has other women in his life—women who are more his type, like models or something. I don't want to get caught up in thoughts about him."
I paused, realizing I was about to reveal more than I intended, but before I could stop myself, the words slipped out: "And besides, I’ve found someone else."
The moment the words left my mouth, I bit my inner cheek, silently cursing myself. Why did I say that?
Aashima's eyes lit up with excitement. "Oh wow!" she exclaimed, nearly bouncing in her seat. "Tell me everything! Who is he? Does he work in this office?"
I laughed nervously, trying to downplay it. "Relax, yaar. I’ll tell you everything. Just have a seat first. But no, he doesn’t work here."
She looked at me with wide eyes, her curiosity piqued. "Then how did you meet him? What’s his name?"
