Lucy walked beside Ryder, her heart pounding from the confrontation that had just unraveled with Reginald. The adrenaline still coursed through her veins, making her feel both jittery and alive. Every step they took down the long, dark corridor away from Reginald’s office seemed surreal, as if she was walking through a dream—or a nightmare, she couldn't tell which. Her mind spun with the whirlwind of revelations, but one thing stood clear: her life would never be the same.

She glanced over at Ryder, his tall frame moving with an effortless confidence beside her. He was still a stranger to her, despite the fact that he had just thrown her a lifeline in the most dangerous moment of her life. But that also made him an enigma. He had appeared out of nowhere, just when she thought all hope was lost. And now, walking side by side, her curiosity burned hotter with each step.

"Who are you, really?" Lucy asked, her voice barely more than a whisper, though the quiet hall magnified it.

Ryder glanced at her, a hint of a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "I'm someone who's been watching Reginald for a long time," he replied, his tone calm but edged with something deeper—something that made Lucy think he had been waiting for this confrontation for far longer than she'd realized. "He’s not as powerful as he likes to think he is. He has enemies, Lucy. More than he knows."

Lucy’s breath caught in her throat. "What do you mean?" Her mind reeled, trying to comprehend the layers of danger that seemed to suddenly surround her. "Why are you involved in this?"

Ryder leaned in slightly, his voice lowering as if he were about to reveal a closely guarded secret. "Let’s just say that Reginald and I have a history—one that goes back years. He thought he could control everything, but power makes people sloppy, arrogant. They start to believe they’re untouchable. That’s when they make mistakes. And Reginald has made plenty."

Lucy stared at him, her heart thudding faster. She had known Reginald was corrupt, but she hadn’t imagined it went this deep. But Ryder’s presence—his cool demeanor in the face of Reginald’s rage—spoke volumes. He was more than just an adversary. He was someone who had come prepared to take Reginald down.

Lucy swallowed hard, her mind racing with a dozen questions. "You said you have evidence?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady despite the swirling chaos inside her.

Ryder nodded, his face growing serious. "I have files, recordings—proof of all the illegal deals, the money laundering, the offshore accounts. I’ve been gathering it for years. And I’m not afraid to use it. But it’s not just about me anymore, Lucy. Now you’re involved."

Lucy shuddered. She hadn’t asked for any of this, hadn’t wanted to be dragged into a life filled with danger and deceit. But here she was. She thought back to the moment she had stumbled upon Reginald’s secret office, her heart hammering as she rifled through those incriminating documents. That was the moment her life had changed, irreversibly.

"You knew I’d find those documents," Lucy said, piecing things together. "You knew Reginald would eventually lead me to the truth."

Ryder’s expression softened slightly, but there was a steely glint in his eyes. "I’ve been keeping an eye on you. Reginald is a dangerous man, Lucy, and you were getting too close to his secrets. I knew it was only a matter of time before you found something he didn’t want you to see. That’s why I had to step in when I did."

Lucy felt a chill run down her spine. The realization that Ryder had been watching her—protecting her, perhaps—was both comforting and unnerving. She had felt so alone, trapped in her marriage with Reginald, suffocated by his control. And yet, Ryder had been there, a shadow in the background, waiting for the right moment to intervene.

"But why help me?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "What do you want from all of this?"

Ryder’s gaze met hers, and for a moment, his hardened expression softened. "I’m not here to ask for anything from you, Lucy. I’m here because Reginald needs to be stopped. He’s hurt too many people, destroyed too many lives. I couldn’t sit back and let him do it to you too."

Lucy’s throat tightened, her emotions swirling in a confusing mix of fear, gratitude, and suspicion. It was hard to trust anyone now, especially after what she had uncovered about her own husband. But there was something about Ryder that felt... safe. As if, despite the danger, she could believe him.

Before she could respond, Ryder stopped walking. The hallway opened up into a grand foyer, its marble floors gleaming under the dim lighting. In front of them was an imposing set of double doors. Ryder pushed them open effortlessly, and Lucy’s breath caught in her throat as she stepped outside.

The night air was cool, crisp, and refreshing after the oppressive weight of the penthouse. They stood at the entrance to a sprawling estate—an old mansion, surrounded by meticulously kept gardens that stretched out into the darkness. The place was breathtaking, a relic of another time, its towering stone facade lit softly by lanterns.

Ryder turned to her with a slight smile. "Welcome to your new home, Lucy," he said, gesturing toward the mansion.

Lucy blinked, her mind struggling to keep up with the whirlwind of emotions and events. "What is this place?" she asked, her voice filled with awe and confusion.

Ryder’s smile widened, but his tone remained serious. "A safe haven. You’re under my protection now. Reginald won’t be able to touch you here. He doesn’t know about this place, and he never will."

Lucy stared at the mansion, her heart still pounding in her chest. *A safe haven.* The words echoed in her mind. She had been running, terrified, unsure of what her next move would be. Now, she stood before a sanctuary—something she hadn’t even dared to hope for.

"Why are you doing this?" she asked, turning to Ryder again. "Why go to such lengths to protect me?"

Ryder’s expression darkened slightly, his gaze shifting to the mansion’s front doors. "Reginald doesn’t just ruin people’s lives—he destroys them completely. I’ve seen what he’s capable of. I couldn’t let him do that to you."

His words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken history. Lucy realized then that Ryder had more than just a professional vendetta against Reginald—this was personal. And suddenly, she understood. Ryder hadn’t just been waiting for the right moment to strike; he had been waiting for someone like her. Someone with access to Reginald’s inner world. Someone who could help him finish what he had started.

Lucy turned back toward the mansion, her mind whirling. This place—it was beautiful, serene even, but it also represented something much darker. A line had been drawn in the sand. By coming here, by accepting Ryder’s protection, she was stepping into a battle that she hadn’t asked for but could no longer avoid.

"Come inside," Ryder said, his voice breaking through her thoughts. "You’ll be safe here. We’ll figure out our next move together."

As Lucy followed him toward the mansion’s grand entrance, her heart still thudding in her chest, she couldn’t help but feel the weight of the decision she had just made. This was the beginning of something new, something dangerous.

And there was no turning back.
