Chapter 06
Little Shark's First StepsThe next morning, a boy who had experienced the best sleep he could remember-his mind finally free from the burden of past traumas shared with his childhood friend-was suddenly jolted awake by a familiar, high-pitched voice.
"Wake up, lazy butt!"
His eyes struggled to open as he saw a hyperactive girl with bright orange hair standing over him. She wore a salmon pink sleeveless vest with a white strap across her chest, a white crop top underneath, and a green, pleated skirt. Her orange hair, tied back with a small aqua-colored headband, bounced as she dashed around the room.
She had teal eyes, a bubbly expression, and an endless supply of energy.
The boy groaned as he sat up, rubbing his eyes, but the girl didn't relent. She hounded him with relentless enthusiasm, singing in a high-pitched tone, "It's morning! It's morning! It's morning! It's morning!"
Sighing again, the boy resigned himself to the inevitable. The scene shifted to him in the restroom, brushing his teeth while the orange-haired girl continued to chatter non-stop.
"I can't believe we've been at Beacon for a full twenty-four hours!" she exclaimed, her voice brimming with excitement. "Not that I thought we'd get kicked out or anything-I mean, you're the perfect student, and I'm... well, I'm me! But it's just crazy, you know? Anyway, how was your sleep? I slept unusually well! What about you?"
The young man, nodded as he continued brushing his teeth, thinking about how well he had slept. It was unlike any other night; the fears and insecurities that had haunted him seemed to have faded away, replaced by an unexpected calm.
The scene shifted to the ballroom, where the two were getting ready for the day. His friend sat at a mirror, brushing her hair and still chattering away, while he tightened the strings on his sleeping bag.
"We've been friends for soooooooo long!" the girl said, her voice animated as always. "What are the odds we'd still be together? Well, not 'together-together...' Not that I'm not saying you're not handsome; you are handsome, but that'd just be weird, right?"
Another scene change, and the two were now sitting together at breakfast. The girl had a pancake hanging from her mouth as she continued talking, undeterred by the food.
"Right! What was I thinking? But still, I hope we end up on the same team together!" She suddenly slurped up the rest of her pancake and added excitedly, "Oohhhh! We should come up with some sort of plan to make sure we end up on the same team together! What if we bribe the headmaster? No, that won't work. He has the school."
The scene shifted again as they were readying themselves in the locker room. The boy was loading his weapon-a pair of green and black automatic pistols, each attached to a collapsible blade that could fold back into the handle.
His childhood friend was still chattering away, lost in her thoughts.
Suddenly, she had an idea. "I know! We'll have some sort of signal! Like a distress signal!" She gasped, her eyes lighting up. "A secret signal so we can find each other in the forest! Can you imitate a sloth?"
After an hour of silence, He finally spoke. "Nora?"
"Yes, Ren?" Nora replied, her eyes gleaming with curiosity.
Ren sheathed his weapons in his sleeves and said calmly, "I don't think sloths makes a lot of noise."
Nora's eyes sparkled as she considered this for a moment, then she squealed, "That's why it's perfect! No one will suspect we're working together!"
