Beth O'Donnell wasn't the type to make her feelings known. If her friend likes the same guy as her, it's never going to cause an issue. She simply would never bring it up. When her best friend since Pre-K, Nancy Wheeler, informed her that she was dating the Steve Harrington, she put her prize winning smile on and to the naked eye she seemed ecstatic for her best friend and eager for more details. In reality though, Beth went home and cried the whole night. It was ridiculous really. Steve really wasn't worth crying over. He was honestly a doucebag. Well, that's what everyone said at least. Beth hasn't spoken to Steve since she was in the fourth grade. Steve was in the fifth grade. A group of boys in Steve's grade had turned her into a whole joke. A certain Tim Cook planned to ask Beth on a date just to stand her up. Steve Harrington not only stood up for this girl, a stranger, but he took it upon himself to fill her in just incase Tim still tried to go through with it. Beth was devastated, Steve comforted the crying mess of a girl until he had to go home.
So as you can see, Beth has loved Steve since this moment. She's never had the courage to speak to him. Stolen glances from afar and daydreams during class were as close as it got for her. She knew Steve remembers. He always gives her a little hint of a smile when their eyes meet. This always sends a slight tinge of pink to the girl's cheeks causing her to break the contact and return her focus back to whatever Nancy and Barb are discussing.
Alice O'Donell whom graduated only two years ago and became Beth's legal guardian shortly after has hopelessly tried to give her younger sister the confidence and push she needs. Beth declares herself hopeless once a day. It wasn't that she thought she was ugly or anything. She knows she's not, but she's not claiming to be Hawkins' hottest either. Steve was just so captivating to the girl that she couldn't even imagine what she would say to him. It's time to let go, and be happy for Nancy. She can't keep having these feelings behind her best friend's back.
