The waiter arrived with one dish after another. Nora excused herself and got up to wash her hands, and everyone smiled at her, waiting impatiently for her to come back so they could finally hear the story.
- "Emily Prentiss and Aaron Hotchner dated?!" exclaimed Garcia while Nora was in the bathroom. "How - and why did we never know?!
- I don't know, I confess that even though I knew Aaron years ago, I never knew that he had met Prentiss and that they were friends.
- or more," added Garcia with a sudden mischievous look that surprised Reid and made JJ laugh.
- I can see we're having a good time without me," smiled Nora as she returned to her seat.
- It just makes you wonder how we didn't notice anything for all those years," Reid explained thoughtfully.
- It's probably the stupidest thing to do, but I think they want to leave that part of their lives behind.
- Why? (Rossi)
- Stupid? (JJ)
- Wow! One question at a time, please," exclaimed Nora, laughing. "Well, I'll get started, you'll soon understand what I mean..." she said.
"It was exactly 10 years ago. We'd just moved again. Emily had finished her studies at Yale and was due to join the FBI. As for Elizabeth, she wanted to be closer to the White House for her own job. So we moved to the posh suburbs of Washington, much to Emily's dismay. I think at the age of 26 she thought she was finally rid of her mother, but no, she was moving to the same town as her. Elizabeth had offered to let her stay with us as Emily had a job in Washington, but you can imagine what her response was. Anyway, they finally came to an agreement, between Mrs Prentiss who didn't want her daughter to leave and Emily who was finding it increasingly difficult to put up with her mother, her reproaches and criticisms about her job at the FBI; Emily would have her own flat in the city centre but every weekend she would visit her mother and help her with most of her parties.
- Did Elizabeth really want to keep Emily with her when she was 26?" asked Reid incredulously, finding it hard to understand given that he was 27 himself and had left his mother 8 years ago.
Then Nora smiled at Spencer's questioning expression and continued: "To tell the truth, what she really wanted was to know that Emily was safe. The ambassador had received several threatening letters before leaving Connecticut. Some said that this was perfectly normal in a profession such as hers, but the letters were becoming more numerous and more aggressive. What worried her most was that they weren't just addressed to her, but to her whole family. I think it was the first time I saw Mrs Prentiss anxious and worried about her own daughter's life. So we were surrounded in her big house by FBI agents, usually three of them, and Emily had to come home every weekend. Then one day I remember Emily coming home, as usual, but what I didn't know was what Elizabeth was going to tell us:
- Hey, my little one! Come here!
- Hello Nora, how are you?" replied Emily, giving her a big hug.
- Oh, you know, I don't know any real change and my weeks are pretty empty without you now.
- Don't say that! I miss you too, you know.
- Emily darling! Thank God you're here!" Elizabeth exclaimed as she entered the living room, a worried look on her face.
Emily had just returned to spend the weekend with her mother, Nora and Elizabeth. She was in Nora's arms and still surrounded by her suitcases in the huge living room of her mother's house.
