The years after graduation had been a whirlwind for both Emily and Jake. Each had thrown themselves into their careers, driven by ambition and a desire to make a mark in the world. Despite working in rival companies, their paths rarely crossed—until an industry conference brought them back into each other's orbit, rekindling feelings they had both tried to bury.

The conference was a major event in the tech world, drawing professionals from across the country. It was held in a sleek, modern hotel downtown, the kind with endless glass windows and a lobby that buzzed with energy. Emily had been invited to present on DataVision's latest advancements in predictive analytics, a significant achievement that had taken months of preparation. Jake, on the other hand, was there representing SecureTech, showcasing their latest cybersecurity innovations.

As fate would have it, their presentations were scheduled back-to-back on the same day. Emily didn't know this, of course, as she focused on her own work, but Jake had noticed. His heart had skipped a beat when he saw her name on the program, but he had brushed it off, convincing himself that it was nothing more than a coincidence.

The moment they saw each other again after three years was electric. Jake had been lingering near the exit of the presentation hall, his eyes scanning the crowd almost unconsciously, when he spotted her. Emily, walking briskly with her laptop in hand, her expression focused, hadn't noticed him yet. But Jake's gaze lingered on her, and all the old feelings came rushing back—the warmth, the attraction, the unresolved tension that had simmered between them since their university days.

But just as Jake was about to approach her, another man stepped into the scene—a man who was all too familiar with Emily.

"Emily!" a deep, smooth voice called out.

Emily turned, a smile spreading across her face as she recognized the man. "Ryan," she greeted warmly.

Ryan Kingston was tall, with a confident air that commanded attention. He was impeccably dressed in a tailored suit, his dark hair neatly styled, and his eyes sharp with intelligence. Ryan had been Emily's colleague at DataVision for the past year, but more than that, he had been a constant presence in her life—a confidant, a partner on countless projects, and someone who had made his interest in her very clear.

Jake's heart sank as he watched the interaction. The way Emily's face lit up when she saw Ryan, the easy familiarity between them—it was like a punch to the gut. He had never been able to confess his feelings to Emily, and now, it seemed, someone else had stepped into the space he had left vacant.

"Great presentation, as always," Ryan said, his tone warm as he came to stand beside Emily.

"Thanks," Emily replied, her smile genuine. "I'm glad you could make it. How did your talk go?"

Ryan waved off the question with a modest shrug. "Nothing compared to what you just did up there. You had the entire room captivated."

Jake clenched his jaw, forcing himself to remain where he was. He knew he should walk away, but he couldn't tear his eyes away from the scene unfolding before him. There was something between Emily and Ryan—something Jake hadn't expected to see. It was more than just professional camaraderie; it was clear in the way Ryan looked at her, in the way he stood close, as if he wanted to protect her from the world.

Suddenly, Ryan noticed Jake standing nearby, his eyes narrowing slightly as he assessed the situation. "Jake Reynolds," Ryan said, his voice cool and polite. "I didn't expect to see you here."

Jake forced a smile, stepping forward to join them. "Ryan Kingston. It's been a while."

Emily turned to Jake, her eyes widening with surprise. "Jake," she said, her voice softening. "I didn't know you were here."
