Jake stood outside the hotel, the cool Washington night air cutting through his thoughts like a knife. He had tried to explain, to tell Emily the truth, but she had walked away. The look on her face, the hurt in her eyes—it haunted him. He had always wanted Emily, more than anything else in his life, and now it felt like she was slipping through his fingers.
He clenched his fists, the frustration bubbling up inside him. As a man, he had always prided himself on being strong, on being able to handle anything life threw at him. But this—this was different. This was Emily, the woman he had loved for so long, and the one he couldn't imagine living without. The thought of losing her, of Leah's words driving a wedge between them, made him feel powerless in a way he hadn't felt in years.
Jake had always been a man of action. He wasn't one to sit back and let things happen; he made things happen. But with Emily, he had tried to be patient, to give her space, to let her come to him on her own terms. And now, he wondered if that had been a mistake. Maybe he should have fought harder, been more direct about his feelings, instead of waiting for the perfect moment that never seemed to come.
He ran a hand through his hair, frustration gnawing at him. What was he supposed to do now? David was clearly moving in, taking advantage of the situation, and Jake couldn't stand the thought of Emily being with someone else, especially someone like David.
Jake's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of laughter coming from the hotel lobby. He looked up and saw Leah stepping out of the elevator, her arm casually linked with another man's. She was smiling, looking carefree and completely unbothered by the chaos she had caused in his life.
Seeing her only fueled Jake's anger. Leah had always been manipulative, using people to get what she wanted, and now she was trying to use him to hurt Emily. The realization hit Jake like a punch to the gut—he had let Leah get too close, let her play her games, and now Emily was the one paying the price.
"No more," Jake muttered to himself, his jaw set with determination. He wasn't going to let Leah ruin what he had with Emily. He wasn't going to let David swoop in and take the woman he loved. It was time to stop holding back. It was time to fight for Emily with everything he had.
The next morning, Jake woke up with a clear sense of purpose. He had spent the night tossing and turning, his mind racing with thoughts of Emily, of Leah, of what he needed to do. But now, as the sun rose over Washington, he knew exactly what he needed to do.
First, he needed to find Emily. He needed to talk to her, to make her understand how much she meant to him. He wouldn't let her run away this time; he would make sure she listened to what he had to say. Jake wasn't going to lose her, not without a fight.
He checked his phone, hoping to find a message from her, but there was nothing. His heart sank, but he refused to let it stop him. He wasn't going to wait around anymore. He was going to take control, do what a man had to do to win the woman he loved.
Jake dressed quickly and made his way down to the hotel's breakfast area, hoping to catch Emily before she left for the conference. As he entered the room, his eyes scanned the crowd, searching for her familiar figure. But instead, he saw David sitting at a table near the window, sipping coffee and reading the newspaper.
Jake's blood boiled at the sight of him. He knew David had been trying to get close to Emily, and last night, Jake had seen the perfect opportunity for David to take advantage of her vulnerability. The thought of Emily turning to David for comfort made Jake's stomach churn with jealousy and anger.
He was about to turn away, thinking Emily wasn't there, when he caught sight of her walking through the lobby, her head down as she checked her phone. Without thinking, Jake moved toward her, determined to talk to her before she disappeared again.
