Chapter 2: Goodbye, My Love
Kataleena stood with her arms crossed as her hazel eyes scanned both her parents. Her hair was deliberately drizzling, from the ocean, onto the tiled floor. The kitchen was dead silence; so quiet that you could hear Kataleena’s siblings breathing from the second floor.
“Well?” Kataleena spoke, earnestly waiting for an answer. But still, no one had spoken. Her parents had a poker face on, you couldn’t tell what they were thinking.
Kataleena slammed the table in front of her, both hands stung from the force. Kataleena tilted her head down and slowly drifted it back up, looking as serious as ever. Her parents didn’t seem surprised at any cause.
“You can’t keep it from me forever.” Kataleena cocked her head to the side and leaned on her elbow.
Kataleena’s mother stepped forward and inhaled a deep breath. “You’re excited for your senior year, correct?”
“Umm, yeah why? Who wouldn’t be?” Kat shook her head while leaning her head forward.
“Are you excited to go to Evanston High?”
“Mom! Why are you asking me all these questions? Yes, I’m excited to go back to that school! What’s your point?” By this time, Kataleena had probably suspected something; either she was transferring to another school, or her mother was just asking her stupid questions.
“Your father and I decided that it will be a great experience if you…” Her mom couldn’t finish the sentence.
“If I… If I what?”
“If you go to the states for your senior year.” Kataleena’s eyes widened and her whole body was still, like a statue.
“You mean the United States! For how long?” Kat wasn’t thrilled at all. She was pissed. He mom did not reply.
“Hah, kidding you’re me right? Oh gosh, mom you had me there. You really know how to make me scared.” Kataleena knew it was true but wasn’t taking it serious.
“Kat, I’m serious. For ten months straight.” Her mother kept a calm tone, trying not to sound forceful. Kat could feel the tiny specks of tears trying to sneak out of the corner of her eyes.
“Please tell me you’re not.” My heart was beating rapidly, while trying to hold all my emotions back. My left hand squeezed into a fist, that I could almost break my own hand.
“Honey, I know you don’t like this, but it’s for your education. Going to school in the states will look good on your college application! With this, you’ll most likely be accepted to Julliard and get a scholarship! You can go to college in New York!”
“But mom, I want to stay in New Zealand! I don’t care if they don’t have the best music program but I want to stay close to home! It’s like you’re wanting me to get out of the house, away from you!”
“Kat! You’re a prodigy! You can’t be going to those schools! You need to be going to the best! And to get to the best, you need to put yourself out there!”
“MOM! You can’t force me to go to Julliard! I can make my own choices.” I ran out of the house, tears crippling down my cheeks.
