It was a cool, crisp afternoon as Baji and I strolled down the quiet neighborhood streets. The vibrant hues of autumn had given way to bare branches and a dusting of fallen leaves.
Suddenly, he paused, his eyes zeroing in on a small calico cat prowling along the sidewalk. Ah, there's that soft spot for animals of his showing again.
"Aw, look at that little guy," he cooed, crouching down and extending a gentle hand. The cat eyed him warily at first, then cautiously approached, sniffing his fingers.
I watched in amusement as he interacted with the stray, his face lighting up with pure delight. He really is like a big softie when it comes to animals. It's kind of endearing.
"You really love animals, don't you?" I remarked, a small smile tugging at my lips.
"Yeah, I do!" he replied enthusiastically. "I don't have any pets myself, but I've got a ton of stuff for cats in my room. Wanna come?"
Later
"Welcome to my room!" he announced, gesturing around the room with a big grin.
"Yes, I know, I saw your room when we met, remember? My piercing," I said, pointing to my left ear.
His eyes widened in recognition. "Oh, right! I forgot you'd already seen all this. It's just, I'm so excited to show you my collection, you know?"
Riiiigght last time I didn't even stay long, and honestly I didn't really pay attention.
I nodded, a small smile tugging at my lips. "It's really impressive. I had no idea you were such a cat lover."
He beamed, plopping down on the floor and running his fingers along the edge of the cat food dish. "Yeah, I've always loved cats. They're just so cute and cuddly, you know?" He gestured around the room. "I've got all kinds of stuff related to cats – figurines, books, even a few cat toys, though I don't have any pets myself."
As I observed his enthusiasm, I couldn't help but notice how gentle and attentive he was. It's a stark contrast to the tough, intimidating persona he often projects when were in the streets.
"So, do a lot of stray cats come in through the window?" I asked, genuinely curious.
"Nah, I don't actually have any cats that come in," he admitted, chuckling sheepishly. "I just like to keep the window open in case they ever do, you know?"
I nodded, impressed by his dedication to creating a welcoming space for cats, even if they didn't actually visit. He really is a softhearted person underneath that tough exterior, though some people can't see it right away. I remember what my first meeting with him was like.
As he continued to explain his collection, my gaze drifted to the various learning materials and pictorial books scattered across his desk. Hmm, I wonder if he struggles with academics. He doesn't seem to be the studious type.
Just then, he glanced up, catching my thoughtful expression. "Oh, yeah, I'm not the best at studying and stuff," he admitted sheepishly. "I much prefer learning about animals and nature through these pictorial books. Kanji is a real pain, you know?"
I couldn't help but chuckle. Well, at least he's honest about it. "No worries. I'd be happy to help you with your studies if you ever need it."
His eyes lit up, and he nodded enthusiastically. "That'd be great, Tora! I'd really appreciate it." He paused, his gaze softening as he looked at me. "You know, you're the best."
I felt a faint warmth spread across my cheeks at his words, and I quickly averted my eyes, focusing on the cat-themed trinkets once more. He may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but he's got a heart of gold. I'm lucky to have him as a friend.
