In Kyoto's frosty spell, where lanterns softly gleam,
A love's grand revelry, like stars in midnight's dream.
From snow-clad paths of wonder to folded blooms so rare,
A heart's surprise alights, a gift in winter's air.
The holiday season was in full swing, and I was enjoying the festive atmosphere of Kyoto. Despite my excitement about experiencing Christmas in Japan, I knew Matteo was a bit sulky about me not coming home. Our video calls had turned into a mix of holiday cheer and playful banter.
One evening, as I was lounging in my cozy apartment with Christmas lights twinkling around me, Matteo appeared on the screen.
"Hey, babe," Matteo said with a dramatic sigh. "So, Christmas is coming up, and I hear Japan does it differently. How's that working out for you?"
I grinned, enjoying his playful annoyance. "Oh, it's magical! Snow, lights, and lots of onigiri. But I have to say, I miss your cooking more than I thought."
He raised an eyebrow. "My cooking? What's wrong with your ramen?"
I laughed. "Your ramen is great, but it's not the same as your legendary Christmas lasagna. Plus, I'm missing out on our holiday traditions!"
Matteo's eyes lit up. "Wait, so you're not coming home for Christmas just to miss my cooking? Should I be offended or impressed?"
"Both!" I teased. "I'm afraid your cooking skills are the only thing I'm not looking forward to missing."
He chuckled. "Well, if you don't come home, I might have to make you a virtual Christmas dinner. I'll send you a recipe, and you can cook it while we video call. I promise not to judge your lack of 'cheesy goodness'."
"Deal!" I said, laughing. "But don't be too harsh on my cooking skills. I'm doing my best with these Japanese ingredients!"
"Alright, alright," Matteo said, pretending to be serious. "But I'm putting you on 'Lasagna Duty' when you get back. You have to make up for missing out this year."
"I'll start perfecting my recipe," I said, winking at him through the screen. "And don't worry, I'll make sure you get your cheesy fix when I return."
Matteo smiled, though I could still sense a hint of disappointment in his voice. "Alright, I'll let you go for now. Just remember, I'll be waiting for you when you come back."

Fast forward to December 26, and I was winding down after my first term in Japan. The school had closed for the holiday break, and I decided to take a stroll through the bustling streets of Kyoto. I was in a quaint little shop buying some souvenirs when I heard a familiar voice.
"Excuse me, miss," a voice said. I turned around to see a tall, familiar figure standing there with a sheepish grin. It was Matteo!
"Matteo?" I gasped, my eyes widening in surprise. "What are you doing here?"
He held out a bouquet of flowers. "I figured you might be missing out on my Christmas surprise, so I brought it to you."
I was speechless, my heart racing. "You came all the way here?"
Matteo nodded, his grin widening. "I couldn't let you experience Christmas in Japan without me. Plus, I had to make sure you weren't eating too many onigiri without my culinary expertise."
I laughed, throwing my arms around him. "You're unbelievable! But I'm so glad you're here."
The rest of our time in Japan was nothing short of magical. We celebrated Christmas and New Year's together, exploring some of Kyoto's most popular spots.
We visited Fushimi Inari Shrine, with its famous red torii gates creating a beautiful path up the mountain. Matteo marveled at the view while I snapped countless photos.
Next, we strolled through Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, where the towering bamboo created an enchanting green tunnel. Matteo tried to take a serious photo but couldn't help making silly faces, much to my amusement.
We also explored Kiyomizu-dera Temple, enjoying the panoramic view of Kyoto's cityscape and the colorful winter scenery.
For New Year's Eve, we attended a traditional festival at Gion District, where we enjoyed street food, bought lucky charms, and watched the fireworks display.
On the night before New Year's Day, Matteo and I had a quiet, cozy dinner at a little Japanese restaurant, where we shared our hopes and dreams for the coming year. Matteo's eyes sparkled as he spoke about his plans and how he hoped to be with me every step of the way.
As the clock struck midnight, we celebrated with a kiss and a promise to make the most of every moment together. Despite the miles between us and the initial misunderstandings, our holiday season ended on a high note.
The surprise, the laughter, and the shared experiences made this holiday one I would always remember fondly.
