The following week, Anna tried her best to settle into a routine, but it was as if the universe had conspired to keep her off balance. Every time she sat down to study, her thoughts would drift back to the mansion and the unsettling encounter with James. Her dreams were plagued with cryptic images, the dark-haired boy’s warnings reverberating in her mind.

It didn’t take long for Emily to notice the change in her.

"Earth to Anna," Emily whispered one day, playfully nudging her during a lecture on behavioral psychology. Anna blinked, realizing she’d been staring out the window for the better part of the class.

"What's going on in that head of yours? You’ve been zoning out a lot lately."

Anna forced a smile, trying to shake off the fog that had settled in her mind. "Just... a lot to think about, I guess."

Emily tilted her head, her bright blue eyes narrowing with concern. "Is it about James? You can tell me, you know."

Anna hesitated. She wanted to confide in Emily, to spill out all the strange thoughts that had been swirling in her mind since that day at the mansion. But something held her back—an instinct, perhaps, or the memory of the fear she’d seen in James’s eyes.

"It’s nothing," she said finally, forcing a lightness into her tone that she didn’t feel. "Just some stuff I need to sort out."

Emily didn’t look convinced, but she didn’t press further. "Alright, but if you ever want to talk, I’m here, okay?"

"Thanks, Em," Anna replied, feeling a pang of guilt for keeping her in the dark. But this—whatever it was—felt too big, too strange to share. Not yet, anyway.

As the days passed, Anna found herself increasingly drawn to the mystery that seemed to surround James. She started noticing little things—how he always seemed to be watching her, even when she wasn’t looking; how he avoided talking about his past or his family; how there was a certain distance between him and the other students, as if he were always holding something back.

One afternoon, after a particularly restless night of sleep, Anna decided she couldn’t take it anymore. She needed answers, and there was only one person who could give them to her.

She waited until class ended, her heart pounding as she made her way to where James usually sat. He was gathering his things, moving with a deliberate slowness that made Anna wonder if he was deliberately avoiding her.

"James," she said, her voice more forceful than she intended. He looked up, surprise flickering across his face.

"Anna," he replied, his tone guarded. "What’s up?"

"I need to talk to you," she said, glancing around the classroom, which was quickly emptying. "Somewhere private."

James hesitated, his eyes searching hers as if trying to read her intentions. After what felt like an eternity, he nodded. "Alright. Let’s go."

They walked in silence to the small park behind the tuition center, where the trees provided a natural screen from prying eyes. The air was crisp, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows on the ground.

When they reached a secluded spot, James turned to her, his expression unreadable. "What is it, Anna?"

Anna took a deep breath, steadying herself. "That mansion. The one you found me at last week. What is it? Why did you say it wasn’t safe for me to be there?"

James’s jaw tightened, his gaze shifting to the ground. For a long moment, he didn’t speak, and Anna wondered if he was going to walk away without answering her. But then he sighed, running a hand through his dark hair.

"It’s... complicated," he said finally, echoing the same words he’d used before.

"Try me," Anna pressed, crossing her arms. "I think I deserve to know, especially after everything that’s happened."

James looked at her, his expression torn. "Anna, you don’t understand. This isn’t something you can just... explain. There are things in this world—dark things—that most people don’t know about. That place... it’s connected to something dangerous. Something you don’t want to get involved in."

Anna’s heart raced. "But why me? Why do I feel like I’m already involved? Ever since I met you, strange things have been happening. And that boy in my dreams—he’s connected to all of this, isn’t he?"

James’s eyes widened slightly, the only sign that her words had struck a nerve. "What boy?"

Anna swallowed, feeling a chill run down her spine. "He... he has dark hair, like yours. He keeps warning me about something—something that’s coming for me. He says I need to be careful, that I’m in danger."

James’s face paled, his usual calm demeanor cracking. He looked away, his fists clenched at his sides. "This is worse than I thought," he muttered under his breath, though Anna still heard him.

"What is?" she demanded, stepping closer. "James, please, you have to tell me what’s going on."

James turned back to her, his eyes filled with a mix of fear and determination. "Anna, listen to me. Whatever’s happening to you—it’s not a coincidence. There’s something inside you, something powerful, that’s attracting... attention. That boy in your dreams, the mansion—they’re all connected to it."

Anna felt as if the ground had shifted beneath her feet. "Inside me? What do you mean?"

James hesitated again, but then he seemed to make a decision. "Anna, I think... you might be Awakening."

"Awakening?" The word felt foreign on her tongue, and yet it resonated with something deep inside her, something that had been stirring ever since the nightmares began.

"Yes," James said quietly. "There’s a power that lies dormant in certain people—a power that, when Awakened, can change everything. It’s rare, but when it happens... it draws the attention of those who would use it for their own purposes."

Anna’s mind was spinning. "And this... this power—is it dangerous?"

"It can be," James admitted, his voice grave. "If it’s not controlled, it can destroy you. And if the wrong people find out about it... they’ll stop at nothing to take it from you."

A cold dread settled in Anna’s chest. "So what do I do?"

"You need to learn to control it," James said, his tone urgent. "And you need to stay away from that mansion. There are things there—things that would feed on your power, twist it into something dark. Promise me, Anna. Promise me you’ll stay away."

Anna nodded, though her mind was still reeling from everything James had just told her. "I promise."

James’s shoulders relaxed slightly, but the tension in his eyes didn’t fully dissipate. "Good. I’ll help you, Anna. I’ll teach you what I can. But you need to be careful. From now on, you can’t trust anyone—not fully. There are people who will try to manipulate you, who will pretend to be your friend just to get close to your power. You have to be strong."

Anna felt a surge of fear, but also a strange sense of resolve. Whatever this power was, whatever danger she was in, she wasn’t going to face it alone. She had James—and maybe, just maybe, that would be enough.

As they walked back to the tuition center, Anna’s mind was a whirl of thoughts and emotions. The world had suddenly become a much darker, more complicated place, but amidst the fear, there was a flicker of something else—hope.

Because if she really was Awakening, then perhaps this power could be the key to finding out the truth about herself, about the strange connection she felt to James, and about the destiny that awaited her.
