ROWAN HEARD THE the front bell of the coffee shop door rang, indicating someone walked in. she walked out of the small backroom, held for staff only.

she dusted off the powdered sugar splatter on her apron from the brownies she decorated after quinn baked them. she sighed softly as she looked up at the door to see a woman, her back to rowan, looking around the shop.

rowan politely coughed, letting the woman realize rowan was standing there. she turned around, and there in the ivy stood rowan's mother, ellen.

her soft smile grew even bigger, her face instantly softening.

"hi baby—" she rang out. rowan immediately dropped the rag she always had in her hand onto the floor. she skipped out of the little flap door into the main area.

"mummy," she breathed in the perfume she so badly loved. her head faced her mother's chest, almost suddenly relaxing. her shoulders dropped as she felt her mother's warm arms wrap around her.

"what are you doing here?" rowan mumbled into her mother's body.

ellen lived a few counties away from london by herself, as rowan's father was never in the picture, and she hadn't planned on coming to london for many years, leaving rowan to see her mother once every few years.

"quinn told me everything that happened," she placed her cold hand on the back of rowan's head, bringing it up and down from the top of her head to her neck, flattening it. she pulled away from her daughter, her hands still holding onto her arms.

rowan's smile faltered slightly but went back to normal as she looked into her mother's eyes. those eyes could make anyone smile.

"oh honey," ellen looked at her, admiring her face. "look at you!"

"i look the same as last time you saw me," rowan laughed it off, her glossy eyes closing. after everything that week, she really needed her mum—and there she was.

"is noah here?"

"in the car."

rowan squealed slightly, jumping up and down on the spot. she dashed to the car, seeing her little brother sat in the back seat, his face planted into his phone.
