In the days following Isabella's death, the atmosphere in the De Luca mansion shifted. The tension that had once permeated the air was replaced by a heavy silence, the kind that comes after a storm has passed. Matteo had been true to his word—Isabella was no longer a threat, and the Lombardos were left scrambling to recover from the loss of their potential ally.
But for Amara, the victory felt hollow. She had seen firsthand the lengths to which Matteo would go to protect their marriage, and while she respected his strength and resolve, she couldn't shake the image of Isabella lying lifeless on the ground, her final breath taken by Matteo's hand.
It was a reminder of the world she had married into, a world where survival meant making choices she never thought she'd have to make. But it was also a reminder of the bond she and Matteo were forming—a bond forged in blood and necessity, but a bond nonetheless.
As the days turned into weeks, Amara threw herself into her work, finding solace in the familiarity of legal briefs and court cases. She needed the distraction, something to ground her in a world that wasn't dominated by power struggles and deadly alliances. But even as she tried to maintain a sense of normalcy, the shadows of her new life loomed ever-present.
One afternoon, as she was reviewing a particularly complex case, her phone buzzed on the desk. She glanced at the screen and saw a text from Serena.
We need to talk. Urgent.
Amara's stomach tightened. Serena's messages were usually lighthearted or filled with gossip, but this was different. There was no hint of playfulness in those words—only a sense of urgency that made Amara's pulse quicken.
She quickly gathered her things and left her office, heading for the quiet café where she and Serena often met. The drive there was filled with a growing sense of unease, the memory of Isabella's threats still fresh in her mind. She had thought that the danger was over, but Serena's message suggested otherwise.
When she arrived at the café, Serena was already there, seated at a corner table with a steaming cup of coffee in front of her. Her expression was tense, her usually vibrant demeanor subdued. Amara slid into the seat across from her, her eyes searching her sister's face for clues.
"What's going on?" Amara asked, her voice low.
Serena took a deep breath, her fingers tightening around her cup. "It's about the Lombardos. They're not done with us, Amara. Not by a long shot."
Amara's heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean? I thought Matteo's move against Isabella weakened them."
"It did," Serena admitted, her gaze flicking around the café as if she were afraid someone might overhear. "But it also made them desperate. They've been trying to find a new way to get to us, and I think... I think they're planning something big."
A chill ran down Amara's spine. "How do you know this?"
Serena hesitated, then leaned in closer. "Because I've been seeing someone. Someone who's connected to them."
Amara's eyes widened, her mind racing as she tried to process her sister's words. "Who? Serena, what have you gotten yourself into?"
"It's Leo," Serena confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. "Matteo's brother."
For a moment, Amara could only stare at her sister, disbelief and anger warring within her. Leo De Luca—the man who had already caused so much tension within the family, the man who had questioned Matteo's leadership at every turn—was now entangled with Serena. It was a disaster waiting to happen.
"Serena, do you have any idea what you've done?" Amara's voice was harsh, the frustration she had been holding back finally spilling over. "Leo is dangerous. If Matteo finds out—"
