"We should be getting back," Firefly said to Fatewalker. "The sun's going to set soon."
"How do you know when it's going to set?" Fatewalker asked, curious. "I know I've lived here my whole life, but I've tried and failed to see. I mean, the other ways than looking at the sky."
"I dunno, I guess I've slept outside for so long, I just got used to the normal time frame." Firefly fast-walked to her sleeping cave. It was in sight now, she would reach it soon. The sooner she made sure everyone knew she was okay, the sooner she was able to eat. And she was starving. "Are you hungry? I'm ravenous. I could eat, like, five thousand guavas right now."
"You don't eat meat?" Realization flashed in Fatewalker's eyes. "Oh, right, the NightWings became vegetarian, right? I forgot. It's weird to have a NightWing--or half-NightWing, you could say--that's vegetarian. My family eats mainly meat, maybe a piece of fruit here and there. Most of the other NightWing dragonets from the last winglets were raised in the volcano for one year, so they know the taste of it and eat it as often as they can." He shuddered. "I'm glad I'm not one of those."
"Yeah, that sounds pretty horrible," Firefly agreed. A flash of resentment rippled through her brain when she realized Fatewalker had classified her as a NightWing, not a RainWing-NightWing hybrid. She wouldn't dwell on that, she decided. Fatewalker probably already read her mind. They had reached her sleeping cave. Inside Asteroid was reading a scroll named REACH UP TO THE SKY--A SKYWING FANTASY(or trying to, the scroll was upside-down). Beside him, Leopard was lecturing him about how to read a scroll. "Hey, we're going to the prey center to eat now, want to come?"
"Nah, Asteroid and I shared a pretty big boar before you came. I'm actually quite stuffed," Leopard smiled. "See you later? Asteroid is going to be leaving soon to go to the male Quartz Winglet sleeping cave."
"See you tomorrow, then," Fatewalker said to Leopard. She nodded in response. "For our first class!" He pumped his wing in the air. "Yeah!"
Firefly laughed. She would have felt better if there wasn't a gnawing feeling in her stomach. She would very much like it if the gnawing would be her to some fruit. Maybe she would try some of this meat Fatewalker described. Time to go please my stomach. She walked away, hearing Leopard cry, "Asteroid, for the last time, the scroll is UPSIDE-DOWN!! If you're going to read, read PROPERLY." They're so cute together.
Her talons clicking against the stone floor was very satisfying. She focused on that for a moment, letting herself fall back and letting Fatewalker take the lead. He knew this school the best, after all. Suddenly loud squawking of chickens and squealing of pigs filled the air, and Firefly was jolted out of the deep focus she was in, listening to her talons.
Thoughts swarmed in Firefly's mind, those that were not her own. There were so many dragons thinking personal thoughts it was almost overwhelming. If she didn't have "practice" by roaming the village, she would be freaking out. Out of the corner of her eye, she sensed Fatewalker flinching as well. I guess Moon's exercises on blocking other dragons' thoughts might not be working as well as I thought it would. She heard Fatewalker's voice in her mind, the only recognizable voice.
After studying the welcome scroll the school had given out, Firefly could recognize some dragons. There was the SkyWings, Parrot from the Jade Winglet, Phoebe from the Gold Winglet, Tanzanite from the Silver Winglet, and Axinite from the Copper Winglet.
The RainWings and NightWings were hanging together, but there were some winglet groups as well. She didn't really care; she was just focused on getting something to eat. Today I'll focus on berries. Raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, cloudberries. Maybe I'll eat an... she overlooked the meat section. GOATS, one table was labeled. I'll eat this one, she decided, picking the smallest one's leg. (Oh my goodness I can't write this parttt I'm searching up small goats and they all look so cute T-T icantdothis)
