The raven haired I couldn't even call someone I know looked at me blankly with her usually lifeless eyes.
With a shaky breath, I open my mouth. "What did you just say...?"
"He's dead. Taro is dead. Your brother is dead." She said.
Lies.
Lies.
Lies...No he's not.
He's not.This is all a bad dream.
Right? My fingers curled, digging into my palms as if pain alone could pull me out of this nightmare. I couldn’t feel anything, not even the nails piercing skin.
The girl's words echoed in the hollow space left behind, each repetition louder than the last. Brother… gone?
Suicide?
I swallowed, trying to steady my voice. “You’re lying. He would never…”
But as I looked into her eyes—those dark, empty eyes—I knew no comfort waited behind them. Only facts. Cold, brutal, inescapable.
The scowl on her face irritated me.
It irritated me so much.
How could she act like she's the only one suffering here?
She didn't even deserve my brother.Brother...
My thoughts spun. Flashes of laughter, of his hand ruffling my hair, his voice telling me it’d all be okay…
Flickering images of him, vibrant and alive, slipping away like sand between my fingers.
I wouldn’t believe it.
I couldn't.“Taro wouldn’t do that,” I whispered, the words falling into a void only I could hear. “Someone did this to him, and I-I’ll prove it. I swear…”
This wasn’t over. Not yet.
Someone killed him.
He didn't do this.
I don't care whatever they say.
He would never.Never...
...
"Why wouldn't you just tell them?!" I scream at my brother, who's covered in bruises once again.
"It's fine. I'm about to go to highschool. I can still—"
"NO!"
"Brother, don't you feel bad for yourself?! One of them tried to electrocute you! You can't just do this! Let's change schools!
But no matter how much nagging, how much yelling or crying, he never listened to me. He let our classmates mess with him.
My brother...
Am I the only one who cares for you?
...
"Hanako? Honey, you're gonna be late for school." My mother's voice called out, as lively as possible. But I know she's just trying to sound happy.
"...go away." I yell back. Rolling over in my bed.
"Hanako... I know things have been tough after what happened to your brother, but please... You can't just throw away your education like this." She pleaded, her voice cracking.
