"I HEARD YOU GAVE UP THE TRIAL WITH WEBBER." Sage caught up to Jackson in the hall.

"Yeah," Jackson sighed, running a hand over his head.

"What happened? You two were doing so good." She frowned, reaching out and placing her hand on his arm. He shrugged, not meeting her gaze. Sage nodded, not knowing what to say and they walked in silence for a few moments before she finally put the pieces together.

"Oh my God, you think Webber could win a Harper Avery award. That's why you're doing this. Because if your name is on it then—"

"Then the Chief will never win, yeah, yeah, I know." He sighed again, running a hand over his face.

It was wrong, but they both knew it was true. There was no way Webber would get a Harper Avery award if Jackson's name was anywhere on it. They would be accused of favoritism if they gave the award to another Avery, so they couldn't. But if Jackson's name wasn't on it, the Chief had a shot.

But quitting took him out of the race for chief resident.

"I'm really sorry, Jackson," she whispered, squeezing his arm.

Jackson just shrugged, "Yeah, well, being an Avery sucks sometimes."

"I know." She squeezed his hand, offering him a sad smile, "I know."
