New Delhi, 2000

Despite her mother's lifelong warning never to accept money from strangers, Urmila made an exception one day and soon learned why she should have listened.

It was one of the rare school holidays for her sister Jiya, and as was their custom, she and Urmila had gone to see the latest Movie in Theatres. They had saved up for two weeks to afford the tickets. As the only surviving members of the family, Urmila and her younger sister had always been exceptionally close, despite their ten-year age gap. Childhood illnesses had claimed the lives of their two younger siblings, who were born after Urmila both of whom had died before reaching their first birthday.
