The morning sun cast a golden light over Xyra as Chiquita and Ahyeon followed Lia through the village, heading toward the central meeting hall. The air buzzed with anticipation, and Chiquita couldn’t help but notice how everyone they passed seemed to glance at her and Ahyeon with a mix of curiosity and caution.

“Why do I feel like we’re about to be put on trial or something?” Chiquita whispered, glancing at Ahyeon.

“Probably because we’re about to meet the council of a secret island society,” Ahyeon replied, her tone equally hushed but tinged with amusement.

“Right, nothing to worry about then,” Chiquita joked, though her heart was racing.

When they reached the meeting hall, Lia gestured for them to enter. The room was grand, with high ceilings adorned with intricate carvings and walls lined with tall torches that flickered with a soft, warm light. In the center sat five elders, each with a commanding presence that filled the room.

One of the elders, a woman with long silver hair and piercing green eyes, spoke first. “Welcome, outsiders. I am Elder Seraphine, leader of the council. You have entered our world, and now we must decide your fate.”

Chiquita and Ahyeon exchanged a tense glance, standing side by side as they faced the council.

“We didn’t mean to intrude,” Ahyeon began, her voice steady but respectful. “We discovered this island by accident and were drawn in by its beauty and mystery. We only wish to learn more about your people and your history.”

The elders murmured among themselves before Elder Seraphine nodded. “Xyra is a place of great power, hidden from the world for centuries. Our ancestors chose isolation to protect the secrets of this island. If you wish to remain here, you must prove yourselves worthy. You will be given time to explore and understand our ways, but know this: the island will test you.”

“Test us?” Chiquita asked, her curiosity piqued. “How?”

“The island has its own will,” Seraphine explained, her eyes narrowing. “It will reveal its trials in time. Until then, you are free to explore, but be warned—there are places where even our people dare not tread.”

Chiquita nodded, her mind racing with possibilities. “We understand. Thank you for allowing us to stay.”

As the meeting concluded, the elders dismissed them, and Lia escorted them back outside.

“You both handled that well,” Lia said, a small smile playing on her lips. “The council isn’t easily impressed.”

“We just want to learn,” Ahyeon replied, her tone genuine.

“And learn you shall,” Lia said. “But be careful. The island holds many secrets, and not all of them are meant to be uncovered.”

As Lia walked away, Chiquita turned to Ahyeon, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “This place is incredible! Can you believe we’re actually here, in a hidden society with ancient secrets?”

Ahyeon smiled at Chiquita’s enthusiasm. “It is amazing, but we need to stay cautious. The council’s warning wasn’t just for show.”

“Yeah, but you know me—I’m always up for a challenge,” Chiquita replied, her boyish grin making Ahyeon’s heart skip a beat.

They spent the rest of the day exploring the village, taking in the beauty of Xyra. The villagers were friendly but kept a respectful distance, their eyes lingering on Chiquita more than once. Ahyeon noticed it too and felt a pang of something she couldn’t quite place—something that twisted in her chest whenever one of the village girls looked at Chiquita a little too long or smiled a little too brightly.

“Looks like you’re popular here,” Ahyeon said, her tone light but with an edge Chiquita didn’t miss.

“Jealous?” Chiquita teased, her eyes twinkling with mischief.

Ahyeon scoffed, trying to hide the flush creeping up her neck. “Why would I be jealous? I’m just saying, don’t get too comfortable with all the attention.”

Chiquita chuckled, finding Ahyeon’s reaction adorable. “Don’t worry, Ahyeon. You’re the only one I care about.”

Ahyeon rolled her eyes, but she couldn’t help the small smile that tugged at her lips. “Just don’t forget that.”

As the day turned into night, Chiquita and Ahyeon returned to their hut, exhausted but exhilarated by the day’s events. As they settled down to sleep, Chiquita lay on her side, watching Ahyeon as she drifted off.

“Goodnight, Ahyeon,” Chiquita whispered softly, her heart full as she watched the gentle rise and fall of Ahyeon’s chest.

And with that, she closed her eyes, her thoughts swirling with the mysteries of the island and the girl who had become the center of her world.
