The argument

Mia stood at the kitchen counter, gripping the edge of the sink as she stared out the window. The late afternoon sun was casting a golden glow over the street, but she didn't feel it. Her chest felt tight, anger bubbling just beneath the surface. She could hear Char moving around behind her, his footsteps growing louder as he approached.

"Mia, can we talk about this?" Char's voice was strained. She stopped a few feet away from her, his arms folded across her chest.

"There's nothing to talk about," Mia snapped, her back still to her. She closed her eyes, trying to push the rising emotion back down. She didn't want to do this—didn't want to fight—but she could feel it slipping out of her control.

"There clearly is," Char said, frustration edging into her voice. "You've been distant for days, and now you won't even look at me. What's going on?"

Mia spun around, her eyes flashing. "What's going on? You really want to know?"

"Yes!" Char threw her hands up in exasperation. "I can't help if you won't tell me what's wrong!"

Mia's throat tightened, her mind racing. She had been feeling overwhelmed for weeks now, the pressures of work, their relationship, everything piling on top of her. She loved Char, but sometimes it felt like too much. Like she was suffocating under the weight of all the expectations, both spoken and unspoken.

"You want to know the truth?" she blurted out, her voice rising. "I never even wanted this! Any of this!"

Char froze, her eyes widening. "What are you talking about?"

Mia felt her heart racing, but the words were tumbling out now, unstoppable. "I'm saying that Rodger forced this whole thing from the beginning! He kept pushing me to go out with you, kept telling me how 'perfect' we'd be together. I didn't even want to, but he wouldn't stop!"

Char's face drained of color. "Are you saying you never wanted to be with me?"

Mia opened her mouth, but the guilt and panic swirled together, making it hard to think straight. She hadn't meant to say it like that. She hadn't meant it at all.

"I..." she stammered, her voice softer now, regret creeping in. "I don't know, Char. Maybe I was just... going along with it. Maybe it was easier to just say yes."

Char stared at her, her expression a mixture of shock and pain. "You've been with me for months, Mia. We've built a life together. Was that all just... easy for you? Something you went along with because of Rodger?"

Mia's stomach twisted. She wanted to take the words back, to explain that it wasn't about her—not really. But the hurt in her eyes made it impossible to speak.

"I can't believe this," Char said quietly, shaking her head. He turned away from her, running a hand through her hair. "I thought we were building something real. But if you never even wanted this..."

"Char, wait—" Mia reached out, her voice cracking, but he was already moving toward the door.

"No," she said firmly, his voice thick with emotion. "I need to think. I need space."

And before she could stop her, she was gone. The door shut behind her with a quiet click, and Mia was left standing in the silence, her heart pounding.

---

The next few days felt like a blur of regret. Mia went to work at the nursery, but her mind wasn't there. She went through the motions—feeding the babies, changing diapers, singing lullabies—but her thoughts were consumed by the fight with Char.

She hated that she had let her fears and frustrations get the better of her. She had been feeling so overwhelmed lately, so unsure of everything. But she hadn't meant what she said. She did want Char—more than anything. Rodger may have introduced them, but the love that had grown between her and Char was real. She had just been too afraid to admit how much she needed her.

Every time her phone buzzed, she hoped it was her. But the days passed with no word, and Mia began to wonder if she had ruined everything for good.

---

On the fourth evening, Mia sat alone on her couch, staring at her phone in her hands. She knew she couldn't wait any longer. She had to fix this. Taking a deep breath, she opened her messaging app and began typing.

"I'm sorry," the message began. "I didn't mean what I said. I was scared, and I took it out on you. Please talk to me."

She hit send, her heart pounding in her chest. Minutes ticked by, each one feeling like an eternity. Just when she was about to give up hope, her phone buzzed with a reply.

"Can I come over?" Char's message read.

Mia's breath caught. She quickly typed back, "Yes."

---

When Char arrived, the tension between them was palpable. They sat down across from each other, neither of them knowing quite how to start. Mia bit her lip, her eyes searching his face for any sign of what he was feeling.

"I'm sorry," Mia whispered after a long silence. "What I said... I didn't mean it, Char. I was overwhelmed, and I let it get the best of me. Rodger may have introduced us, but... I fell for you. That's real."

Char sighed, rubbing the back of her neck. "You really hurt me, Mia. I've been trying to figure out if what we have was just... something you were going along with. Like I was just convenient."

Mia shook her head quickly, tears brimming in her eyes. "No, Char. I swear. I love you. I've just been so afraid lately. Afraid of getting too close. Afraid of how much I care about you."

Char looked at her, his expression softening. "I care about you too, Mia. I just need to know that you're all in. That you're with me because you want to be—not because Rodger pushed you into it."

Mia nodded, her heart aching with sincerity. "I am. I'm with you because I want to be. I'm so sorry I made you doubt that."

Char reached across the table, taking her hand in his. The touch was gentle but grounding, pulling her back from the edge of her fears.

"We'll figure this out," Char said softly. "But we have to be honest with each other. No more holding back."

Mia squeezed his hand, relief flooding her chest. "I promise. No more holding back."

And as they sat there, hands clasped together, Mia knew that their love was worth fighting for. She had let fear and doubt cloud her judgment, but now, she was ready to face the future—together.
