Camp half-blood. The home, scratch that, sanctuary of demigods, kids who were part human, part greek god. It was a refuge for those who never quite fit in, who spent their whole lives feeling different, because they were different.
Hidden deep within the woods on the edge of Long Island, the camp was concealed to those not meant to see it. Inside camp half-blood, it was like stepping into another world entirely- one where the ancient past and modern world blended together in a strange, exhilarating harmony. Here, dyslexia wasn't a learning disability; it was a sign your brain was hardwired in ancient greek. ADHD wasnt a problem to be fixed, but your natural born battle reflexes. Here different was celebrated, because everyone was just as different as you were.
Scattered across the grounds were cabins for each god and goddess, each having its own personality, shaped by the god it represented and by the demigods who called it home. Although, many cabins were towering and grand, full of marble and columns, demeter's was much like a secret garden, tucked away in the heart of camp, overflowing with life. From the outside, it looked as if the cabin has grown straight from the ground, tangled vines encapsulating the walls, bursting with leaves and flowers in every shade of green and gold. Blooming jasmine wrapped around the windows, a normal roof being replaced by a canopy of leaves and branches that let in dappled sunlight. Inside, the floor was made of polished wood that felt soft under one's feet, the walls were busy with shelves packed with seed jars and dried herbs, as well as potted plants. the ceiling gently rustled as light shifted through it, leaves occasionally dropping onto the ground.
this was the home of Mariana, daughter of Demeter. Unlike her siblings and even fellow half-bloods, Mariana often couldn't help still feeling out of place, as if she were a perennial flower blooming in the wrong season. Although she inherited the warm and generous spirit of her mother, she often finds herself feeling... jumbled. No matter how much love she poured into the world, she always found herself wrestling with and underlying loneliness, a persistent feeling that she doesn't belong. For unlike her siblings, Mariana didn't have full access to her powers, she never had done.
You see, at birth Demeter sensed a power within Mariana, one she had not seen before in her other children. A force that could bring life to barren lands or unleash natures fury. she feared that such power would overwhelm her young daughter, and decided to scatter Mariana's power across the world, sealing it within seven mystical seeds hidden in sacred places. As long as the seeds remained intact, Mariana's abilities would be balanced, allowing her to grow up free from the burden of her full potential. But of course when the time was right, Demeter would allow her daughter to find the seeds once she knew how to control her powers and use them for good.
For the first seven years of her life, she lived in a quiet rural village, surrounded by fields that flourished under her care. Her powers were a secret gift, something she shared with the land and plants, not people. She was a gentle soul, more at ease in the company of trees and flowers rather than other children. However that peaceful loneliness was shattered when dark forces, ancient enemies of Demeter, discovered the existence of the seeds and one by one sought out to destroy them, disrupting the balance Demeter had so carefully crafted. Each loss was a wound in Mariana's soul, bringing nightmares of twisted forests and dying crops followed by terrifying surges of power she could neither control nor comprehend.
Although, the dark forces had only successfully destroyed two seeds, Mariana's powers still remained unstable and difficult to control, forcing her mother to flood her mind with fragmented visions and cryptic whispers that urged her to flee her home before more damage could be done.
At the mere age of seven years old, Mariana began her journey to camp half-blood, a journey in which she would meet her best friends: thalia, luke, annabeth, and grover, who would aid her in arriving safely to camp, one making the biggest sacrifice of all to ensure this happened.
now, Mariana was twelve, and with the help of Chiron and others at camp, she had learned to keep her surges of power at bay. Mostly. Aside from the occasional plant that she would accidentally kill when she was feeling particularly emotional, she was good, normal. Well as normal as a Demi-god can be. However, the nightmares hadn't shown any mercy. of course she had got better at dealing with them, not having to sleep with annabeth every night to offer her an ounce of comfort as she once had done when she first arrived. If anything the nightmares had only grown more frequent and harsher. Her recent nightmares even included whispers, a quality that hadn't been an issue before. It was as if a man was speaking to her in her slumber, uttering inexplicable things, trying to get her to give into the darkness she had been so desperately trying to battle. Each night she'd awake in a cold sweat, globules running down her forhead, mixing with the salty tears that ran down her rosy cheeks, with a name in mind, one the strange man kept repeating. Perseus. Perseus. Perseus.
something was changing. And not in a good way. She could feel it.
