"Red, you have to get out of the car and go inside. You can't stay in the car all year long." Mom says to me in a soothing tone. "Mom I'm scared! What if one of the older grades bullies me!? What if my teacher is bad!? What if they don't have a good playground!? What if-" Mom cuts me off. "Sweets listen here, stop with the what if's, and stop being scared, the older grades are hallways and hallways away from you, you met your teacher on meet the teacher night, she seems nice, and all playgrounds are big and fun, now go on before your late!" Mom says, basically pushing me out of the car.
I get out and walk in to the school, only to be blasted by a bunch of talking and loud voices, nothing like preschool. I get scared and speed up my walk only to be yelled at to walk by some girl wearing a bright yellow vest that says something on it but I can't read. I slow down and make it to my class and walk inside. I get seated and look around and see Caleb at a desk but before I can say hi, a stern looking lady comes up to me, and then I realize that she's my teacher. I want a different one.
"Welcome Red. Choose any open seat and ponder your life's existence while we wait for the others to arrive." Weird Looking Lady says. Also, what do half those words even mean!? Ponder? Existence? Arrive? What the heck!
I walk over and sit next to Caleb and he excitedly waves at me, I wave back and sit at my desk while staring at some of the other kids in my class. A bunch of kids... arrive? And Weird Looking Lady is talking a lot.
"And we're all settled. Welcome travelers, I hope you enjoy your new education system building. It was built in 2002, for a girl named McKenny Roberts. Her husband, Donald Roberts, built this school in honor of her love for learning. It now stands as one of the best schools in the city, earning multiple awards per year." Weird Looking Lady says. "Teacher, I don't know-" A nice-ish looking girl tries to say, but gets cut off. "No ma'am. I am Mrs. Jacobs. You shall call me Mrs. Jacobs. You must raise your hand when wanting to speak. If you attempt to say something while I am speaking, I will simply raise my voice to drown out yours. Once I finish saying what I was saying, that's when I'll look at you and ask what you need. Do you understand? Thank you." She says. It kinda scared me the way how she was speaking. She speaks like she owns the world when she doesn't. It makes me mad. But mom always said to respect my elders and I trust my mom more than I trust Mrs. Whatever Her Name Was.
After the introduction of the rules, she tells us to stand up because we're introducing ourselves. Again. I thought we did this last year, why do we have to do it again? But whatever, she starts going around the room, and finally slaps a ruler on my desk, telling me to introduce myself. I want to introduce myself but I don't want a ruler slapped on my desk and my mom told me to speak up when I don't like something, so I start speaking. "Um, first of all, can you please not slap the ruler on my desk? It makes a loud noise and I don't like those, and it's kinda mean. But anyway, my name is Red, like the color." Everyone is kind of staring at me, like I did something wrong. Nobody's speaking, including Weird Looking Lady. "I'm, um, sorry if I did something wrong, but can you guys please not stare at me like that?" I reply in response to everyone's stares. Everyone else kinda looks away, but Weird Looking Lady continues to stare before finally talking. "Miss Red Mathis. You shall never talk to me in that tone. Do you understand and hear me? I have the authority in this place and you mustn't disrespect that. If you fail to understand my rules I will send you up to see the principal. Never talk back to me, young lady." She says. I'm using all my strength to not cry right now but then she raises her voice even louder. "What do you say? You don't stay quiet! Haven't your parents taught you manners!? Speak lady! You mustn't stay quiet! That is disrespectful! Go to the office!" She basically screams. I quickly stand up and shuffle my way out of the classroom, sniffling as my tears roll down my face.
It suddenly hits me suddenly that I don't know where I am. I walk for what feels like forever until a teacher notices me, wandering out in the halls.
"Where are you supposed to be, sweet little lady?" She says, in a quiet, kind tone. I wipe away the remaining tears and reply in a wobbly tone, "The office", I say, turning away, expecting to be yelled at again. "Oh no! You're far from there! Would you like me to walk you down there while you tell me what you did?" She says. "Can you tell me who you are before that?" I ask. "Of course! I'm Mrs. Kindle! I teach first grade!"
