Song Inspo: Breathless by Caroline Polachek
Josh stood in the doorway of his sister's room, dressed in just a hoodie and jeans. The only thought you could gather was how good he looked. It didn't even occur to you that he wasn't dressed for the dance. He had invited his ex that everyone assumed he'd get back together with eventually. His mom had questioned the date, but he was adamant they were going as just friends. You knew enough about Nessa to know the breakup had been Josh's idea... both times... she probably asked him, thinking it'd win him back. You found yourself so much more curious than you should have been how that invite went down and if it was really just friends or he was just keeping his mom in the dark the way teenagers do.
Before you could figure out how to ask without being too obvious, Olivia blurted out: "Dude, are you going to get ready? The dance starts in twenty minutes?"
Josh: "Nah I decided not to go."
Loren: "What? No, it's your senior year, it's your last homecoming ever. You have to go."
Josh shrugged his shoulders as Anthony walked up behind him, joking: "I offered to be his date once he got stood up but I guess I'm not up to his standards."
Josh laughed awkwardly then sulked back off downstairs. You wanted to push for details but saw the looks of daggers Olivia had shot Loren when she asked so you didn't dare. Luckily, Loren didn't seem to learn her lesson because she asked: "Did Nessa really stand him up? That b!tch!"
Anthony: "Nah, I was just joking... technically. It's not standing anyone up if you call first. Even if that call is when he's halfway dressed."
Olivia: "She canceled on the day of? Tf? I feel so bad for him."
Anthony: "I mean I think he's fine. He didn't really want to go with her anyway. Besides, I'm not going and no one seems to feel sorry for me."
Loren: "You haven't gone to any dances for like two years."
You excused yourself to go after Madison to put your things in your trunk as well since you were all ready. You pulled the hem of your long dress up so you wouldn't trip, hurrying down the stairs but stopped just at the bottom to hear their Mom, trying to convince Josh to get dressed and go. He looked up and caught your stare with pleading eyes.
You cleared your throat and their mom just sighed in defeat. She patted her son on the shoulder and walked away. You weren't sure whether you should butt in or continue out the door but Josh answered your dilemma by beginning to rant: "Why can't she just butt out? God!"
You: "I- Uh-"
Josh sighed: "Ugh! I know she means well. I am literally fine. Why does someone HAVE to go to their school dance. The world won't end if I skip one."
