"I looked into you, alright?" she admitted, crossing her arms over her chest. "When my father said he was hiring you, I wanted to know who you truly are"
Alejandra's confession hung in the air between us, her words heavy with implications I hadn't anticipated. My mind raced, trying to piece together what she was saying, what it meant that she had looked into me.
"You looked into me?" I repeated, my voice barely concealing the anger and confusion that swirled inside me. "Why?"
Alejandra shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant, but I could see the tension in her posture. "I'm careful about the people who come into my life, especially those who are supposed to protect me. I needed to make sure you were... trustworthy."
"Trustworthy?" I echoed, my voice rising slightly. "You had me investigated? Do you have any idea how dangerous that is? If you were found out—"
She cut me off with a wave of her hand, her eyes narrowing. "Relax, Nikolai. I'm not some helpless little girl. I know how to cover my tracks. No one found out, and it's not like I did anything serious. Just a little digging."
I took a step closer, anger simmering just beneath the surface. "Digging into my past without my knowledge isn't just a little thing, Alejandra. You could have put yourself at risk. You don't know who you're dealing with."
She smirked, crossing her arms. "Oh, I think I know exactly who I'm dealing with. The question is, do you?"
Her words sent a chill down my spine. There was a confidence in her voice, a certainty that made me uneasy. I had thought I was the one in control, the one keeping tabs on her. But now, it seemed like she was playing a game of her own, and I wasn't sure of the rules.
"What's that supposed to mean?" I asked, my voice low and dangerous.
Alejandra took a step closer, closing the distance between us until we were nearly chest to chest. "It means, Nikolai, that you're not the only one who can play this game. You think you're here to protect me, to watch over me, but maybe... just maybe, I'm watching you too."
I stared at her, trying to read her expression, to see if she was bluffing. But her eyes were steady, unwavering, filled with a challenge that made my blood boil. This wasn't the Alejandra I thought I knew. This was someone else—someone smarter, more cunning, more dangerous.
"You don't know what you're getting yourself into," I warned, my voice tight with frustration. "If you've looked into my past, then you know what I'm capable of. You should be careful."
She laughed softly, the sound sending a thrill through me despite my anger. "Oh, Nikolai, you don't scare me. If anything, you fascinate me. You're like a puzzle I'm determined to solve. And the more I learn about you, the more I want to know."
I clenched my jaw, my fists tightening at my sides. "Alejandra, this isn't a game. This is real life, and you're playing with fire."
She took another step closer, her body brushing against mine. "Maybe I like the heat," she whispered, her lips so close to mine I could feel her breath. "Maybe I want to get burned."
