"Drew, I need you to go to the Clarks around six o'clock and give Twinkie this bag of fruits," Willie Mae told her son who had just come home from work. "I have choir practice for four but I don't wanna take them all the way to the church to give to Mattie."Drew frowned at his mother, "But if Dr. Clark is gonna be at choir practice, won't Twinkie be there too?"
Willie Mae handed the bag over to her son, "Twinkie doesn't come to Saturday choir practice. She'll be home," She turned back to leave the room. "If nobody answers just bring it back and I'll have Ethan carry them tomorrow."
Drew sat the bag on top of his desk and went back to watching his sitcom.
His mind wandered to Karen, as it naturally did since the day he first saw her again. She had been a bit more cooperative in communicating, but still didn't say much. She would try and keep her facial expressions under control to hide her emotions in the moment.
A main indicator of her emotions were through her eyes. She knew how to hide her emotions well on her face but nothing could stop those eyes from telling their truth. She had a lot of pain, anger and hurt inside of her, and Drew wanted nothing more but to take it all away himself.
He was glad his mother sent him to go across the street because he hadn't found time to catch up with Twinkie as yet. He looked at his watch and it was a quarter past six so he got up, grabbed the bag of fruits and made his way across the street.
He knocked two times on their front door, rang the doorbell once and waited patiently. He looked around at their front yard, Dr. Clark had loved gardening for as long as he could remember. She would always tell Jacky before she left to go to choir practice to not let the children run all over her flowers. Drew smiled at the memory.
As he reminisced in his head, the front door opened and there stood his old friend, Twinkie. She hadn't changed much since he had left except now he was taller than her.
"Drew!" Twinkie exclaimed. She pulled him into a hug immediately and brought him inside, closing the front door behind her. "It's been so long since I've spoken to you."
Drew sat at the dining table, placing the bag in front of him, "I know," He pushed the bag towards her. 'My mom wanted me to bring this over for you guys." He watched as Twinkie looked inside the bag and smiled at him before beginning to put away the fruits.
"Ethan told us you came home from college back in June, but we didn't have the time to stop by and say anything," Twinkie told him. "You know I'm always on the road with Momma." She tried to joke.
Drew nodded, "Yeah, not so much anymore though," He watched as she sat across from him. "Y'all have been on a break for a while now. When are the infamous Clark Sisters gonna be back in action?" He smiled at her noticing her own smile wavering a bit.
Twinkie shrugged, "There's so much going on right now. I'm still writing music but...things have changed around here the past two years. There's barely anyone around to sing it."
"What do you mean?" Drew asked.
Twinkie shook her head, "Just that we're all in different places in our lives right now. We'll come back though," She reassures him, though it feels like it's more for herself. "So, have you found any work since being back?"
Drew nodded, "Yeah, I got a job down at Primrose. I'm the latest addition to their team of doctors," He told her.
Twinkie froze for a moment but quickly got herself together, not wanting Drew to notice. She looked at him for any indication that he might know what she knew. Drew saw the fear in Twinkie's eyes and he wanted to put her at ease but he knew that he would have to address it.
