After finishing our study session in the library, I walked alongside Alexander, my mind still buzzing with thoughts of the girl I’d seen him with the other day. The scent of old books and the muted whispers of students lingered in the air as we approached the exit. I took a deep breath, determination coursing through me, my heart pounding in my chest.

“Hey, Alexander,” I started, my voice a little shaky, betraying the nerves I was trying to suppress. “Can we talk for a minute?”

He paused, glancing at me with a curious expression, his eyebrows raised slightly. “Sure, what’s on your mind?”

I bit my lip, hesitating for just a moment before the words tumbled out. “I saw you with a girl the other day. Who is she?”

His brow furrowed slightly, and I watched as a mix of confusion and surprise flickered across his face. “Sophia? She’s my cousin. We were just catching up.”

A wave of embarrassment washed over me, and I felt my cheeks heat up like they were on fire. “Cousin?” I repeated, feeling foolish for jumping to conclusions. How could I have assumed the worst?

“Yes,” he said, an amused glint in his eyes as if he found my reaction both entertaining and endearing. “You thought she was my girlfriend or something?”

I nodded, suddenly feeling like a deer caught in headlights, my mind racing to recall every moment I’d seen them together. “I mean, it looked like you were really into her, and—”

Alexander let out a soft chuckle, clearly entertained by my embarrassment. “You really thought I was dating someone?”

I waved my hands dismissively, my face burning hotter. “I was just being cautious! You’re popular, you know? I thought maybe someone had snagged your attention.”

“Caution is good,” he teased, a playful smile on his lips, “but maybe you need to keep that imagination in check.”

“Okay, okay! It’s not like I’m paranoid or anything,” I shot back, trying to recover my dignity. “I just… it seemed like you were in another world when you were around her, and I thought—”

“What? That I’d forget about our study sessions?” He leaned against the wall, crossing his arms, a smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. “Is that how little I mean to you?”

I rolled my eyes, feigning annoyance. “Oh, please! You’re not that important,” I said, attempting to sound casual, but I could feel my heart racing at the banter, excitement bubbling beneath the surface. “I just have a tendency to overthink things sometimes.”

“Clearly,” he replied, his tone teasing as he leaned closer, lowering his voice slightly. “You should try to relax. I promise, there’s nothing going on with her.”

I huffed, pretending to be annoyed while secretly enjoying the lighthearted exchange. “Fine! I guess I’ll just have to keep my guard up around you.”

“Good luck with that,” he said with a grin, his eyes sparkling with mischief.

His words hung in the air between us, and for a moment, the tension shifted, leaving behind a sense of camaraderie that felt almost electric. I could feel the embarrassment still prickling at my cheeks, but it was comforting to know that there was no misunderstanding between us.

“Thanks for clearing that up,” I finally said, my voice softer now, tinged with relief. “I appreciate it. I’ll try not to jump to conclusions next time.”

“Smart move,” he replied, the teasing glint in his eyes replaced with something warmer and more genuine. “But just so you know, if I ever do start dating someone, I’ll make sure to give you a heads-up.”

I laughed, the tension breaking completely, a sound that echoed through the empty corridor. “I’ll hold you to that!”

As we stepped outside, the cool air hit us, invigorating and refreshing. I took a deep breath, feeling lighter, the weight of my worries dissipating with each step. Sure, we weren’t in a relationship yet, but moments like this made me believe that maybe, just maybe, we were heading in that direction. The laughter we shared lingered in my mind, a promise of what could be, and I couldn't help but smile at the thought.
