Echoes of Guilt

Olivia sat motionless for a while after Alexander left, staring blankly at the door that had closed behind him. The silence in the grand living room felt heavier now, almost suffocating, like the weight of unspoken words hanging in the air. She could still feel the tension in his voice, the pain in his eyes as he spoke about his brother.

Her heart clenched as her mind replayed his words. **"I ruined my brother's life... it should have been his."**

The depth of his guilt was something she hadn’t expected, but now it all made sense. The way Alexander carried himself, the subtle sadness that seemed to shadow him even when he smiled. He wasn’t just hiding his wealth—he was hiding the pain of losing his family.

Olivia rose from the couch, her legs feeling slightly unsteady as she paced the room. She glanced around, taking in the opulence that surrounded her. Everything screamed of wealth, but now she saw it differently. It wasn’t just luxury—it was a reminder of what Alexander had lost.

She wandered over to the fireplace where he had stood just moments ago, her fingers lightly grazing the cold marble mantel. Her thoughts raced, trying to piece together the puzzle of who Alexander truly was.

**Who was his Brother? What really happened?**

The questions lingered in her mind, but she knew better than to push him for answers now. He wasn’t ready, and part of her understood why. Whatever had happened, it had left deep scars—scars he wasn’t ready to reveal.

As she paced the room, her gaze shifted toward the glass doors leading to the balcony. She could see his silhouette in the dim light, standing outside, his posture stiff as he faced the night. The cool breeze ruffled his dark hair, but even from here, Olivia could sense the turmoil within him.

She thought about going out there, joining him, but something held her back. Maybe he needed space—time to gather his thoughts, to breathe. She sighed softly, feeling helpless. She wanted to be there for him, to help him carry the weight he bore. But how could she, when he wasn’t ready to let her in?

Walking back to the couch, she sank down and pulled her knees to her chest, resting her chin on them. The night felt long and uncertain, and all she wanted was to ease the heaviness in her heart.

**Maybe... a change of scenery would help.**

The idea slowly crept into her thoughts. Alexander needed an escape, a break from everything weighing him down. And maybe she did too. Somewhere away from the mansion, the reminders of his past, and the pain he was trying to shield her from.

**A weekend away—just the two of us.** Somewhere peaceful, where he could let his guard down, even just a little.

Olivia glanced back at the balcony one last time, her heart heavy with concern but also determination. **I’ll plan something,** she decided. **Something that will lift him out of this, even for a little while.**

And with that, the idea of a weekend getaway began to take shape, something to bring them closer again, and maybe, just maybe, help Alexander find a moment of peace.
