Night had fallen over Yokohama, cloaking the city in a deep, velvety darkness. The air was cool, tinged with the scent of the sea, as Akutagawa Ryuunosuke walked through the quiet streets, his long coat billowing slightly in the breeze. His sharp, cold eyes scanned the area, always on alert, always ready for a fight. But tonight, his mind was elsewhere, drifting back to the recent mission that had left him feeling strangely unsettled.
The mission had been successful, of course—it always was when Akutagawa was involved. But there had been a moment, a fleeting second when his concentration had wavered. And it was all because of her.
Higuchi Ichiyō, his ever-loyal subordinate, had been by his side as usual, providing support, covering his back. But tonight, he couldn’t shake the image of her determined face as she fought off their enemies, nor the sound of her voice calling his name in concern.
Lost in thought, Akutagawa didn’t notice Higuchi until she was standing right in front of him. Her presence, as always, was a mix of determination and quiet strength. She was out of breath, having run to catch up with him.
“Akutagawa-senpai,” she said, her voice slightly breathless but resolute. “You left without saying anything. I was worried.”
He stared at her for a moment, the cold mask he usually wore beginning to crack. “There was no need to worry,” he replied curtly. “I can handle myself.”
“I know that,” Higuchi responded, her eyes softening as she looked at him. “But… I still worry. You’re important to me.”
Akutagawa felt a strange sensation in his chest, something he wasn’t used to. It was like a tightness, a warmth that he didn’t know how to deal with. He turned away, trying to suppress it, trying to maintain his icy demeanor.
“You shouldn’t waste your concern on me,” he said, his voice quieter than before. “I’m not worth it.”
Higuchi stepped closer, her eyes filled with an emotion he couldn’t quite understand. “That’s not true,” she said, her voice gentle but firm. “You’re more important than you realize. To the Port Mafia… to me.”
For a moment, there was only silence between them, the world around them fading away as they stood there, connected by something deeper than words. Akutagawa could feel his defenses weakening, the walls he had built around himself beginning to crumble under the weight of Higuchi’s sincerity.
“Higuchi…” he began, using her first name for the first time, the sound of it unfamiliar on his tongue. “Why do you stay by my side? Why do you care so much?”
Higuchi smiled softly, her eyes never leaving his. “Because I see the real you, Akutagawa-senpai. Not the cold, ruthless persona you show the world, but the man who’s been hurt, who’s fighting to prove himself. I stay because I believe in you. I care because… I love you.”
The words hung in the air between them, heavy with meaning. Akutagawa’s breath caught in his throat, his mind racing as he tried to process what she had just said. Love. It was a concept he had never allowed himself to consider, something he had always deemed unnecessary, a weakness.
But looking into Higuchi’s eyes now, he realized that maybe, just maybe, it wasn’t a weakness at all. Maybe it was the one thing that could save him from the darkness that threatened to consume him.
Tentatively, almost as if he was afraid of breaking the moment, Akutagawa reached out and took Higuchi’s hand in his. It was a small gesture, but it spoke volumes.
“Thank you,” he said quietly, his voice rough with emotion. “For staying… for caring.”
Higuchi’s smile widened, and for the first time in what felt like forever, Akutagawa felt a warmth spread through him, thawing the coldness in his heart. They stood there, hand in hand, the night surrounding them, but it no longer felt oppressive. Instead, it felt peaceful, like a new beginning.
In that moment, Akutagawa realized that maybe, just maybe, he wasn’t alone after all. And for the first time, he allowed himself to believe that there was something more to life than just the endless fight. There was hope. There was love.
And it was standing right beside him.
