Monday morning already sucked. The corridors were buzzing with students relaying their weekends. I did not want to hear about Melanie Roger's beach party or Clinton Day's newest fling.
It was not that I was not a party girl. But all I cared about was keeping my grades up and getting a decent job with my degree. That did not mean that I needed to hear about their rich, carefree lives, though.
And then there was was Rory. She was rattling about her cruise trip.
"Oh, Eva, I wish you were there! We went to this island and stayed there for a while, we also went diving with all these pretty fish...OOH, and the food mmm..." she blabbered, while I tried to tune her out.
She did not know what kind of a place I lived in. Whenever the conversation of her coming over to my house came up, I switched topics or distracted her by some other method.
Her family owned two manors in Blueseed, and a few more overseas. A.k.a she was loaded. She was not dumb or unkind, but sometimes she remained unaware of her surroundings. I liked her, but I did not want to hear about her five course menu when I was surviving on stale bread.
"Eva, are you listening? I asked whether my boyfriend could join our study session today? He really needs to bring up his grades." Rory stood before me, her hands on her hips. Apparently, I had stopped in the middle of the corridor, books in my hands.
In that time Rory had finished her cruise story, staring at me with eagar eyes. Rory was stunning, with her wavy blonde hair, beautiful features and a model like body. She always wore expensive clothes, and never the same twice, at least outside college where we didn't have a uniform; brand names I could not even pronounce and effortless makeup always at hand.
I finally registered her comment and resisted the urge to roll my eyes or make a snarky comment myself. I always tried to reign in my personality around her, I did not want to lose the only person I could call a friend. But Rory's boyfriend Ethan was a jerk. He was clearly using Rory as an accessory but my warnings to her had fallen on deaf ears. He was also the only one other than Rory who was not afraid of me.
"Sure, Rory." I forced a smile, which probably looked fake and horrible, but Rory jumped, clapping her hands with a joyful dance. "YAY! Study session! Anyways, how was your weekend Eva?" We were about to begin our chemistry class, the professor, it seemed, was running late. I softly traced my healing wound through my jacket, thinking of an answer that would appease her.
I was attacked by a guy, not a human but a man with literal scales. I suddenly have a new tattoo I did not sign up for. Oh, and this super hot guild leader of a supernatural community thinks I am one of them and wants to ship me off to some academy. Nevermind that I am still trying to process my non-human state. Something that my parents apparently hid from me before they died and left me with a bitch of a family member, who shows me no respect at all. I paid this month's bills which means I had to ease up on food. Yep, just the perfectly ordinary weekend. My bitter thoughts were intercepted by the sound of the door opening.
"Later," I whispered to Rory, knowing very well that there would be no later.
...
Classes droned on until mid-day. I was exiting the bathroom when I was cornered by Eathan, a football player and Rory's boyfriend. I looked around to see that the corridor was empthy. Rory was waiting for me in the library. I sighed inwardly, already knowing where this was heading.
"Hey baby, you ready to go?" he had his hands in his pockets and a wicked look on his face.
"You have a girlfriend," I sneered, not skipping a beat.
