Chapter 4

My shift at the pub the previous night had ended with me earning more money than I expected. I sat in my bed, sighing almost happily at the thought. After a small argument, a glaring session, and several negotiations later my stubborness had prevailed in the face of my now 'leader' Dean.

I did not want to miss my monday night shift and I was feeling fully recovered- much to Dean's reluctance. But he let me go on the condition that I immediately report any Nellaf sightings and that I go back home before sunset, after which they tended to be out and about more.

Of course, I had broken both the rules. I was not about to cut my shift in half- every penny went straight into my savings. And I had noticed something interesting about Pete, a regular customer at the pub. He had a beak and feather like things sprouting from his body.

I had learned what triggered these Nellafs. I just had to stay far away so they didn't 'smell' me and make sure that they didn't see my tattoo. Good thing it was September. And that my leather jacket was practically like a second layer of skin to me.

I decided then that Pete would be my first assignment. Right after I trained with Dean and learned whatever secret code there was to killing these demons.

I ran my fingers through my waist length hair, impatiently waiting for his call. Dean had told me to expect his call anytime that day. Right after he convinced the council that he could be my trainer. If they disagreed...my heart dropped at the thought.

My phone blared suddenly causing me to jump slightly. It was Dean. My heart started beating faster. I waited for a few rings to pass, not wanting to seem too eagar.

"Hello." My tone conveyed no emotion.

"Hello, Evangeline. I have good news. The council has agreed to let me be your personal trainer, and allowed you exemption from the academy for now," Dean sounded tired. I tried not to let the pause in his talking worry me too much. "We will train at my house in the evening everyday. Six sharp. How does that sound?" His proffessional tone irritated me for some reason. Of course, I had to be impolite when I returned with a snappy, "I'll be there at six," and cut the call. I could have sworn I heard him sigh right before I kept the call. Moments later, my phone dinged with a message. It was his address.

But when I glanced into the bathroom mirror later to get ready for college, I was surprised to see a glint of excitement in my eyes.

...

Evening was right around the corner as I quickly changed from my uniform to my classic leather jacket and black outfit. It allowed me to blend into the night easily. My hair was already braided and out of my face. I only kept it undone and flowing when I was alone. I didn't like that it added to my whole damsel- like person. My name and slightly large eyes were already a problem in that department.

I added another layer of eyeliner to make my eyes appear smaller and then slung my bag over my shoulder. I had been acting distant from Rory the whole day. Raihn must have used his whole magic vodoo on her, because she did not remember ever planning a study session the previous day. Eathan had disappeared without trace. I double-checked that my knife was securely tucked in my boot before locking the apartment behind me and leaving for Dean's which I realised belatedly, was nearly just as far as my college. Next time, I'll go directly after classes. I avoided taking the public transport as much as I could to save money, and walking was almost therapeutic so I did not mind it.

The scenery changed from dirty and polluted to quaint and lovely soon enough, but I kept my eyes peeled for any Nellafs. People seemed to be minding their own business, probably returning home from work, students returning home after classes. Are all Nellafs converted or are some born that way? I mean there had to be atleast one to initiate it. I filed away those thoughts to ask Dean later. Ugh, I have to stop refering to himself so familiarly as though her were a...friend. I chided myself. Things were, after all, simply professional.
