CHAPTER 5I was half way through my plate when Alex asked me a question. "So what's your blessing?" I looked up from my food, Norman had said that he thought that my blessing had something to do with the weather. "I can control the rain, I think, that's what Norman said at least."
Alex nodded his head. "Mines sound manipulation."
"How does that work?" I asked, I mean, just from the name I had a rough idea but still it never hurts to ask. "Do you want me to give you an example?" For the first time he sounded genuinely excited."No no, don't trust him, he'll probably make you deaf." Emily interrupted. "Hopefully not." Retorted Alex. I rethought my decision.
"On second thought don't worry about it." I already didn't have the best ears, no need to ruin them any further. "Ignore her, she's always been boring." Emily rolled her eyes. After a while I finished my pasta, and as soon as I ate the last little bit the plate shot up and zoomed towards the kitchen, almost hitting me in the face.
Alex and Emily had barely touched their plates, they were too busy talking. Would it be rude if I just sat up and went back? "You already finished your plate!" Alex said it with a mix of awe and shock.
"Yeah, I mean, I thought that was a normal amount of time." Now they both looked at me as if I was an alien. "But the headmistress hasn't even given her opening speech." said Emily. "Oh, shite." Well what was I supposed to do now? "Does it really matter?" I asked. "I'm not sure about Scotland but here it's a sign of disrespect."
would I get in trouble? Would the headmistress really be that mad if I ate a couple minutes before her? "Well then why would they bring our food before she arrives?" Emily rolled her eyes at me. "To test our discipline!"
Emily made it seem as if it was obvious. She was getting on my nerves. I leaned back into my chair and looked out at the other people, they were in fact not eating. She was opening her mouth but was interrupted by all the lights in the hall.
Everybody went silent. The only noise that filled the room was the taping of footsteps, BANG, the lights turned on all pointing at the middle of the hall. There stood an Asian woman, she was wearing an intricate purple and gold robe. A kamino to be more specific. Her face was completely covered in white makeup.
She stood there and as I blinked my eyes, a microphone appeared in her hand. The hall was filled with whispering until she put the mic close to her mouth and cleared her throat. Now it went back to silence. "Good evening students." Her voice was soothing. "I hope you all had a great day."
Today has been the worst day of my life. "Some announcements for tomorrow, 1st," She spoke with authority now. "The school trip to Paris for the 7th graders has been delayed by 2 months." There was a wave of disappointment. "Now now, all the outdoor activities for tomorrow have been canceled."
I heard Alex let out a small. "Yes." The lights all turned on again. "That will be all for today, you may all eat." There were cheers from some of the older students. And then she disappeared, leaving the microphone to fall to the floor.
"See, nothing bad happened." My voice was confident, but when I looked at Emily and Alex their faces had turned pale. They were looking slightly above my head. I turned my neck to look up, and I froze too. standing right behind me glaring into my eyes was the headmistress.
"Why would anything bad happen, dear student." She said soothingly. "Oh uhm, no reason. Just joking around." Her eyebrow perked up at my lie. "Good good." She stared at me and I prayed that she didn't notice the fact I had eaten my food, after a while the lady disappeared.
I let out a huge sigh. "Your lucky she didn't notice your plate." Alex said blankly. "Yeah lucky."
I waited for them to finish their food. Before Alex and I left Emily spoke to me. "Alright I have to go back to my dorm, it was nice to meet you Luka."
"Thanks." Alex led the way back to our dorm. We walked in silence leaving me time to reflect on what happened at dinner.
