James Potter and Severus Snape were in relationship with each other. But as fate had they couldn't have a happy ending. Petunia Evans always hated James for taking away Snape since had a huge crush on him, so she did something really unforgivable. She drugged James's drink with Amortentia so he falls in love with Lily her sister. Lily was completely oblivious to her sister's scheme and thought James really loved her and thus married him. she was completely unaware that her marriage led to an ugly breakup. But even after scheming like this she wasn't able to get the person she wanted as snape completely disappeared no one knew where he went except Albus Dumbledore. Albus told snape of the prophecy and risk of James dying so he joins Voldemort's army as a death eater to spy on their work.
petunia was able to keep a stable dose of Amortentia as long as lily and James were still living with them but after marriage they decided to stay separately from the family (note: lily was pregnant when they decided live separately). Since the dosage of love potion was abruptly cut off James started to come back to himself and learned everything from lily. he felt guilty and hurt about the incidents that happened, he wanted to just go find snape, but lily was on her ninth month, and he couldn't leave her in this state. After Harry was born James started keeping a Diary where he wrote letters to Snape telling him about the events that took place also what actually happened in the past. When he got to know the prophecy, he decided to parcel his diary to snape unaware where he was, so he just wrote his name and send it to the owl. The same night Voldemort attacked them lily was the first one to die and James died later in order to protect Harry.
*After this the story progressed the same way as they original version. Harry was taken to Petunia and Vernon. here Vernon and Petunia were both involved in making Harry's life hell. snape got the diary but didn't have the courage to read it after hearing about James's death*
