Chapter 4

The morning light filtered gently through Nina's bedroom window, painting the walls in soft shades of gold and peach. It was a new day, full of promise and potential. Nina stretched languidly, basking in the warmth of the sunlight that wrapped around her like a comforting embrace. The beauty of the morning seemed to whisper a promise of hope and new beginnings, easing the remnants of her unease from the day before.

She slid out of bed and walked over to her closet, choosing a light blue blouse that complemented her eyes and a pair of well-fitted jeans. Her reflection in the mirror brought a sense of calm as she carefully applied a touch of makeup, aiming for a look that was natural yet polished. The process felt therapeutic, a way to prepare herself not just for the day but for the journey she was on.

Downstairs, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and sizzling bacon filled the kitchen. Her mother was at the stove, humming a gentle tune. Nina's heart warmed at the sight of her mom, her presence a source of comfort and familiarity.

“Morning, sweetie,” her mom greeted with a bright smile. “How was the job yesterday?”

Nina took a seat at the breakfast table, her gaze drifting to the plates of pancakes and fruit laid out before her. “It was good,” she replied, trying to sound enthusiastic. “The staff is really nice, and Mr. Thompson was helpful. I think I’m going to like it.”

Her mom nodded, her eyes twinkling with approval. “I’m glad to hear that. I know it’s a big adjustment, but I’m sure you’ll do great.”

Nina took a bite of her pancakes, the sweetness of the syrup a small comfort as she thought about her shift. Ethan’s arrogance and cocky demeanor had left a mark on her, and she wasn’t sure how she would handle him if he continued to be difficult. Despite her irritation, she hoped that time might soften his attitude and perhaps, they could even become friends.

Her mom’s voice pulled her from her thoughts. “You’re heading to school soon?”

“Yeah,” Nina said, standing up from the table. “Thanks for breakfast, Mom. I’ll see you later.”

As her mother drove her to school, Nina gazed out the window, lost in thought. The drive was peaceful, with the morning sun casting a golden hue over the world outside. She tried to focus on the positives, reminding herself that she was starting anew, and that included navigating the complexities of her new job and social interactions.

When her mom dropped her off at school, Nina felt a mixture of anticipation and anxiety. The bustling hallways were already alive with students, their chatter and laughter creating a symphony of new beginnings and familiar routines. She took a deep breath and walked into the school, determined to make the most of her day.

Inside, the sight of couples practically glued to each other in the hallways was a stark contrast to her own situation. The public displays of affection seemed to highlight her own uncertainties, but she pushed those thoughts aside as she made her way to her locker.

Just then, she spotted Theo by his locker. His face lit up when he saw her, and he immediately walked over with a broad, genuine smile.

“Hey, Nina,” Theo greeted warmly. “How’s it going? I’ve been thinking about yesterday. It was really great.”

Nina’s heart fluttered at his smile, and she couldn’t help but return it. “Hey, Theo. Yeah, it was really nice. I had a great time too.”

They exchanged phone numbers, their laughter mingling with the buzz of the hallway. Theo’s easygoing nature made her feel at ease, and the connection they shared seemed to amplify the brightness of her day.

“So, what’s on the agenda today?” Theo asked, leaning against the locker with a casual confidence that made Nina smile.

“Just the usual,” she replied. “Classes, maybe some homework. And I guess I’ll be working later. Yeah by the way I got a job yesterday”
