I grab my soft gig case out of the back of my blue smart car and slam the trunk closed. I sprint up the familiar set of worn down stone steps and run towards the colossal stone building in front of me. Nicholas Harrows Collage of Classical Music. My home, my safe haven.
I check to see if anyone is around before rushing into the old building. I can't be late. Today is the biggest concert of the year and I can't miss it.
"Violet, Violet, you're here!" Gabriel, my section leader, shouts as I run backstage, "We didn't know if you would make it!"
"Would I miss a performance?" I ask.
"Well....."
"Gabriel!"
"Performers you're on in ten." A loud booming voice informs us over a loudspeaker.
"Violet, go get changed! You can't wear that crappy emo stuff on stage." A familiar voice shouts over the chaos that is backstage.
"Emilie?" I question even though I know exactly who it is.
"Yes, now go get changed."
She shoves some stage blacks into my hands and I rush into the woman's bathroom. I quickly change then head to a small practice room to warm up.
I take out my horn and run through some quick scales before running back to backstage. I burst through the door just to slam in to something head first.
"Ow." I mumble as I rub my head in a desperate attempt to ease the pain. I look up, and see the one person I don't want to see. Drew Blackwell.
Sure he's most likely the hottest guy in school or maybe even the state but he doesn't date. Or seem to have friends for that matter.
"I'm so sorry." He says in his angelic voice right as the loudspeakers crackle to life.
"Will all musicians please take the stage."
"I.....um....have to.....um.....feed...my pet...dragon" I manage to mumble out my clumsy, toungetied mouth before, with my trombone in hand, running to get in line with Emilie.
"Violet, what took you so long?" She asks in a harsh whispered voice as I slip in line almost unnoticed.
"I ran in to someone I know from school." I respond quickly as we walk out on stage smiling big cheesy smiles.
"Oh..."
I have to keep it a secret that I live a double life from everyone except for parents and bffls like Emilie. A student during the day, professional trombone player at night. Someone write a book about me.
After the performance I realized that Drew had seen me in my stage blacks and with a trombone. If he figures out my secret I'm screwed. He can't find out. Ever.
No one can.
