Day and night even out twice a year, and we have twelve hours of light and twelve hours of dark. Apart from it's importance in science and geography, equinox is a great excuse to throw a party. And of course the idea belongs to no other than Nathaniel Rhode.
It's March and we are settling into our bedroom in Daniel's summer house in the Hamptons. The weather is sunny with winter breeze sneaking in through the curtains. I put on a sweater, open the windows and look out.
The party crowd is already in the garden, despite the early morning hours. Some guests are setting up the barbecue. Some are carrying coolers while Daniel is crouched between the speakers, trying to get the music started. I chuckle when I see Olga laying on a sun-bed with a lemonade in her hand. Her bright pink cardigan is falling over her five-month-old baby belly. She lazily lifts her giant sunglasses above her head and smiles at the blue sky.
Nate's footsteps are approaching me from the behind. He puts his arms around my waist and pulls my back against his chest. His morning stubble grazes against my cheek.
"What's Olga thinking?" he asks, propping his chin on my shoulder.
"Lunch," I say with a grin.
"Which lunch?" he asks and makes me giggle. "Her ten o clock pickle sandwich or...?"
"Burgers." Easy answer. Burgers top everything else.
"Yeah, that's her burger smile," Nate agrees.
When Olga licks her lips and scratches her belly button, Nate and I start laughing. She looks like a hungry wolf.
And I'm hungry too. For Nate.
I hook an arm around his head and pull his face against my neck. His lips start leaving pecks under my ear. I bite my lip and push my body harder against him.
"Wanna try the bed?" I ask huskily.
"Wanna go out for a walk?" Nate asks at the same time.
Both of us look at each other and share an awkward smile.
"Okay, let's try the bed," Nate says.
"Yeah, let's go out for a walk."
Our perfect timing makes me laugh.
Nate turns me around to face him, then holds both of my hands. Something about his smile melts my heart and makes me feel like I'm the only woman in the universe.
I rise on my toes to peck the corner of his sweet lips. "Walk first. Sex later," I suggest.
Nate kisses my cheek, then grabs a sweater from our open suitcase.
Once we're downstairs, he leads me to the garden. He wants to introduce me to everyone before we leave.
The three guys who are in charge of the barbecue are Nate's editors. "I work with them day and night," Nate explains as he stands tall, gliding his fingers down my back.
The couple setting the table are Nate and Daniel's friends from high school. "They've been together forever," Nate says with a subtle grin. "Love at first sight."
"Everyone told us we're crazy, and that we should explore other relationships before ending up together," the blonde woman says. "We didn't listen."
"When you know, you know," the guy says, winking at his wife.
The way they look at each other makes me smile.
We say hi to the rest of our friends, and assure Olga that there'll be burgers before we set off to the beach.
The shore is a short walk away from Daniel's house. Our bare feet sink into white sands as we try to make it near the ocean. Our hands are tucked into our sleeves but our pinkies are hooked together. The sun is mischievous. The cold is biting.
