The cool breeze of early autumn whispered through the trees as Cessy made her way to the campus’s central courtyard, her mind spinning with thoughts of Nowa. Her phone buzzed incessantly in her pocket with notifications from friends and classmates, but she ignored them, her focus solely on the unfolding game between her and Nowa. She had decided to attend the psychology department’s “Mind and Matter” lecture, which she had overheard Nowa mention to one of his friends. It was the perfect opportunity to see him again in a more academic setting, to subtly show that their interests aligned beyond mere social gatherings.

As she approached the entrance, her heart skipped a beat. There he was, standing with a small group of students, looking effortlessly charming in his casual jacket and jeans. She quickly smoothed her hair and took a deep breath, approaching with calculated nonchalance.

“Hey, Cessy!” A familiar voice called out before she could reach Nowa. It was Marta, her classmate from psychology. Cessy turned, offering a polite smile. Marta was friendly, with an enthusiasm that Cessy often found overwhelming.

“Oh, hi, Marta,” Cessy replied, trying to keep her tone light. Her eyes darted to Nowa, who was still deep in conversation with another girl. For a brief second, a pang of jealousy gripped her, but she quickly suppressed it.

“I didn’t know you were into these lectures,” Marta continued, oblivious to Cessy’s divided attention.

“Yeah, well, I thought I’d expand my horizons a bit,” Cessy said with a casual shrug, her gaze still subtly fixed on Nowa. She felt a slight twinge of satisfaction when she saw him glance in her direction.

Marta continued chatting, but Cessy only half-listened, nodding in the right places while keeping Nowa within her line of sight. He seemed to be wrapping up his conversation. Cessy felt her pulse quicken as he turned toward her.

“Cessy, hey!” Nowa called, flashing a bright smile as he approached.

Marta, catching on, smiled knowingly. "I’ll catch up with you later, Cessy," she whispered with a wink, leaving them alone.

Cessy felt a flush of warmth at the attention. "Hi, Nowa," she greeted, matching his energy with a smile of her own. "Didn't expect to see you here."

"Really?" he chuckled. "I’m practically a regular at these things. I’m a bit of a psychology nerd on the side."

Cessy laughed. “That’s funny; I actually find psychology fascinating too. I guess we’re both nerds then.”

Nowa's eyes brightened with amusement. "Guess so. Mind if I sit next to you?"

Cessy’s heart fluttered. “Not at all,” she replied, her voice carefully measured to conceal her excitement.

As they made their way into the lecture hall, Cessy felt an electrifying thrill. Sitting side by side, their shoulders almost touching, she felt a sense of closeness that was intoxicating. The lecture began, but her mind wandered. She was hyper-aware of every movement, every breath he took. Her fingers twitched, tempted to brush against his.

The professor’s voice faded into the background as she struggled to concentrate. Halfway through the lecture, Nowa leaned over and whispered, “Are you getting any of this?”

Cessy chuckled softly. “Not really,” she whispered back. “I got lost around the third slide.”

Nowa grinned. “Same here. Maybe we should compare notes afterward and try to make sense of it together?”

Cessy’s heart pounded in her chest. “Yeah, that sounds great,” she agreed, trying to sound casual.

The remainder of the lecture passed in a blur of excitement and nerves. As the lights came up, Nowa stretched and glanced at her with a playful grin. “Wanna grab a coffee and decipher what just happened?”
